Question Diesel Fuel Filter

I'm well overdue changing my fuel filter on my 2011 520d F10. I have one, I've just been spooked a bit by some of the posts I've seen on the web. There is talk of having to use a diagnostic tool to bleed the low pressure fuel circuit, prior to starting the engine. Otherwise the high pressure fuel pump can run dry and reduce its life. Given how expensive the HP fuel pump is, I obviously don't want to risk prematurely wearing it out.

I think it should be an easy job. BMW want £160 to do it. I'm worried that if there is a special procedure and I take it elsewhere whey won't follow it.

My questions are:

1) Is there any truth in this?

2) Wouldn't the low pressure pump run anyway, when the ignition is turned on.

3) Also I tried to get a diagnostic tool off of ebay. It had ridiculously complicated installation instructions, took ages to install and didn't work. Can anyone recommend any software service tools that are easy to install and work?

Well, after replacing the filter you may get 1-2 dry starts, yes. Now whether this will have any lasting effect on the pump...

What I can tell you is that ISTA/D (the official software BMW uses) says absolutely nothing about bleeding the pump (13 32 051 - Renewing fuel filter (N47 D20 O/T 1)

Otherwise changing the filter is an easy DIY - it's basically disconnect from both sides and replace, it's just messy because of all the fuel which flows off.

Thanks for the info. I asked at a 'low cost' service center and they said they hadn't heard of this procedure, they just swapped them out, just like you said.
