Hi all, about to pull the trigger on a 2012 550i xdrive. My wife has a 2011 335i x drive coupe and in 3 years has gone through 9 tires and 2 wheels - thank god for tire and wheel insurance.

That said, I've read that you can put a slightly taller non-run flat tire on the car and throw a spare donut and jack in the trunk (getting the spare either way). Do you think this is better than going with the RFTs with Tire and Wheel insurance? Dealer wants about $2,500 for the tire and wheel insurance for 5 years.

I ditched the run-flats on my car and keep a compact spare in my trunk (compact spare from an E60 + 10mm spacer). I hated the run flats as they rode very harsh and are expensive to replace should anything happen to a tire. I also bought a CPO car, and opted to pass on the wheel and tire insurance. Had the car for about 1.5 years now and this decision has been working out just fine for me.

Can't say I'm 100% at ease driving around with no spare, even with the kit in the trunk, but that was the case with RF too, it might work, but might fail you too, guess it depends on what kind of puncture you may be dealing with.

There doesn't seem to be agreement on RF tires, pretty much everywhere I looked people seem to be divided on benefits/cost/durability/handling.

Here is my solution. Since that post, I also picked up a scissor jack that fits in the small capartment in the trunk. Hopefully I never have to us it or the spare.

My dealer, BMW of Fairfax sold me 5 year wheel & tire insurance for $1200.

Let me warn you first before you get this:

1. Unless your car is brand new, you don't qualify for BMW W&T insurance. You are most likely getting something like EasyCare which is still good.

2. EasyCare will not cover your wheel and tire unless it breaks the seal and start losing air. It is very hard to do that on runflat as it will most often just bubble. If your tire bubble, EasyCare will not cover even if your wheels are bent.

3. $2500 is ripoff. Go to another dealer.

Thanks, I agreed $2,500 is a bit much. FYI, you qualify for BMW W&T insurance if the car is new or CPO (which this car is).

For a brand new 528i lease I am being quoted
Tire and rim insurance- 1500 for 4 years (from CNA Tire).
Excess wear and tear insurance - 700 for 4 years with 7.5k cap expense at lease turn-in.

Are these quotes reasonable? Do I even need to get the excess wear and tear insurance if I am getting the tire and trim insurance? I live in the North east where roads are not really great. This is my first time leasing a BMW and I don't know a lot about cars in general. Any inputs appreciated. Thanks.
