Moving from '13 F10 535i to '08 E60 M5
Long story short..having owned ///M and ///AMG cars before I find it really hard to adjust with a 535i..I have done some mods and can do some more but don't want to rice up with all show and no go..
I bought the 2013 535i thinking that I will keep it for at least 3 years and won't go to the drag strip anymore but its not working and my heart skips a beat whenever I see the ///M or ///AMG badge on the road..I really miss the power, torque and that awesome sound from the massive NA engines.. The 2008 E60 M5 in question has 27,000 miles but no warranty..I have not inspected it yet but I am ready to pay for minor maintenance/service if any..If I go this route then I plan to keep the M5 for at least 2 years.. Anybody took a similar route? Would really appreciate any input.. |

If you are a true performance head and dont hesitate with the costs of an M5 go ahead and go for it. Enjoy M5. Why ask me about it? You know what you want and you know I hope the cost of keeping the M5 in your custody.

I'd look at the F10 550i also. It is basically a de-tuned m5 engine and with a few Dinan tunes you can get the car close to where the F10 M5 is for about 80% of your driving needs. Other thoughts are the new F10 M5 or maybe an M6 (last model or this one). Having come from M's and AMG's I can believe you when you say the 535i is a performance shock to you.

Is the M5 a manual or the auto manual? I've never driven one, but have heard nothing but bad things about the single clutch auto manual. Test drive it in stop and go traffic before making the purchase....

Thanks to everyone who gave their opinion in this thread..I finally went to see the car and here is my detailed opinion for people like me who are thinking of doing something similar..
I kept '06 E60 530i Msport for an year and '07 E60 M5 for 2 years so the E60 shape and M5 power was not new to me..I parked my F10 next to this M5 and damn..the E60 looked dated..like at least 2 generations old..not happy I went inside and started the engine, lovely v10 sound..it had remus exhaust which improved the OEM sound a little but the interior was smaller than F10..I did not notice how improved F10 interior is compared to E60 as I moved to Mercedes after the M5 but now as I was sitting inside it..it looked and felt smaller..I would compare the size close to the interior of F30 now..not happy Just after I started the engine, several warning signs popped up on the dash..I starting checking..steering wheel sensor, pdc, ddc, oil condition in red, brakes needed service after 1500miles..I checked and rear tyres were completely worn off..wtf..not happy I asked the owner and he said the car was parked for an year..had the smg replaced..the engine was replaced under warranty..I have no clue why he advertised the car saying that its in perfect condition..he played with my emotions..not happy at all I initially planned to go inspect the car and then buy it then and there..but instead I returned with my F10..I guess I will just get an ECU tune for now and then jump to the current M or AMG when I see a good deal |

You are right to have walked away. Sounds like that M5 has seen better times/years. I'd just go for the F10 M5 and call it even IF you need the power that bad. Afterall you get what you pay for and so going ahead and biting the bullet may be your best option for happiness.

Update: I have bought a 2010 X5M Melbourne Red with full options and having previously owned Mercedes Benz ML63 AMG, I am very happy with this purchase.

For the past year or so, I was determined on getting an E90/E92 M3 for its naturally aspirated V8/8k+ redline. I came close to pulling the trigger a few times but glad I didn't. The F10/F30 body appealed to me a lot more. Like you stated, the E60/E90 looks quite dated. It came down to a question of which one did I value more: performance or aesthetics ...and it happened to be the latter. By no means is the F10 a slouch but it does not have the engine of what the current Ms have. I'm more than happy with my purchase knowing that I could have gotten an M that's much more powerful. I'm on the same boat towards not wanting to throw a ton of money on making it faster, when there are cars out there readily available with that power. It comes down to what makes you happy and what satisfies your needs. Just my honest opinion.
