The computer controls the air fuel mixture. K&N is a total waste, it won't do anything in terms of performance.

I don't get your point, would you explain further? More air in the motor means more fuel to keep the same AFR which means more hp.

The computer is going to control almost everything. You need the ecosystem adjustment to see power gains, mainly the ECU. The Dinan stage 2 for the F10 is all software. Additionally, you can add some incremental power with a freeflow exhaust and completely modifying the intake system, but simply swapping the paper element for the K&N is similar to this...
If a pro athlete wants get bigger faster stronger, he trains @ the gym, runs on a track, swims laps in a pool, watches his diet, gets proper rest. He doesn't get better by just swapping his shoes out. That's what you're doing with a K&N filter in the stock housing.

Is this your first K&N? I've made the mistake of using it before, didn't do anything.

Wouldn't it be more like STOCK is the athlete with a mask on his face trying to run, and the K&N is with an open faced mask... thus more performance since you can breathe better...

The filter on the 550i has a grey pre-filter attached to the top of the airbox. I removed mine, but didn't see or hear much of a difference.
heck every bit help right!!!

If you are considering keeping your cars long term here's some good unbiased info for anyone thinking about an aftermarket filter like K&N.

http://moto.lexp.net/wiki/ISO_5011_D...er_Test_Report

As for gains, anyone who believes the claims and think any of these filters provides any significant performance gains try this...

Test your car with a new stock OE filter.
Next test your car with NO air filter

The difference between these two is the maximum theoretic gain you can achieve....in most cars this is 1-2%. (For example the E39M5 you can gain ~6hp on top of the 400 by removing the air filter...in a turbo/super car you get even less)

No I'm just making it for me but if I show good gains and performance maybe i'd make it available since I've got all the CNC bit done, the maf housing was drawn and flow tested on solidworks. Here are some pics:

nice work,
Whats your plans on the piping setup?
Engine bay is tight, so its gonna be a nice challenge.

Getting the filter away from the top of the cats will help.

Well I've got some ideas for what to do with the piping but the last difficult thing I need to do is figure out the best way locate and weld on the bung for the vaccum lines. I agree the stock airbox location is a terrible design.
