Considering going from a G37 to an F10
Hi all. I'm starting to do my research and plan a bit for making my return to BMW this spring. Previously owned an 08 E90 328, wasn't enough power for me so I ended up getting an 09 G37 sedan. Truly was an impulse buy, as I loved the power but now I've come to realize that there isn't much else I love about it.
So as I start to think about getting my next bimmer, I am torn between considering trying to find a "well equipped" used/CPO F10 535 or a more loaded new F30 335. While I have read a couple comparos of the G37 and the 335, I haven't found any between the 535 and the G. My biggest concerns are the difference in driving feel(liked the E90, G37 is nice but lacks luxury) and space(when out with friends about once a week, E90 was cramped, G37 is a bit better but not the most roomy). I'm not too worried about power vs the added weight (approx 500lb difference between F10 535 and G) since regardless of if I got the F10 or the F30, I plan on getting it tuned and a few mods. Anyone on the forums come to an F10 from a G, or have any thoughts? Thanks!!!! |

They really aren't even in the same class. The F10 is much higher quality inside than the G (or a 3). That said the F10 is also a bigger car and isn't as nimble. Lots of threads on here on how to option a 5 so that the handling is crisp. All in all the 5 is just a much more luxurious vehicle. Not really a penalty in acceleration if you go with the 535.

535i is a great luxury car with quiet and smooth ride. Driving 335i after it, you will feel the cheapness of 3 series, but 3 series can handle and perform better.
F10 is way above in luxury and a step down in performance. Last week I test drove Q50, I thought I will like it, but I was disappointed by its quality materials. F10 has a solid drive almost at par with a 7 series. 3 series is a different class.

I came from a G, with a z4 in between.
Compared to a G the F10 is a boat! You might want to try a 550 to overcome the weight gain. And im tuned and on coils for reference, as was my G. But i do highly recommend the switch. As a loyal infiniti owner for 5 years. It would take a hell of alot to get me out of my bimmer to get back into one.

Good comments so far. I also switched from a 08 G35 to an 11 528i. The G as with the 3 series is more nimble, but the F10 is definitely is more of an luxury ride. Definitely more room in the F10 than the G.

Steering and ride is 100x better in the BMW ... very tight steering and sporty ride ... however my 535 has the M-Sport w/ Dynamic Handling Package, Adaptive Drive and Active Roll Stabilization |

Had a V36 G35x. 18" Enkei rims, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, Front Strut Tower Bar. Aftermarket speakers (Sony Ribbon tweeters [Infinity EMIT style] with HiVi wooffers)) Custom dynamated the doors.
Now have a 2014 535i, 18" factory rims on Eagle LS-2's. G35x - not a lot of torque - ATESSA ETS was predictable but intrusive. Just when you think it'll understeer, the AWD kicked in. - harsh ride on bumpy roads. Good on highway. - good 0-60 straight line acceleration. Got 5.4s hard launching, 5.6 standard launch on 93 octane. - OK interior. Definitely not an entry level Mazda feel. - great handling and nimble car So based upon that you get a sense of where I'm coming from. 2014 535i - 2014 model adds improved steering and suspension. (2013/2014 have optional M-Sport suspension -- I don't have it.) - Lots of torque. Probably not faster 0-60 but on the highway it feels just as nimble as the G35x despite the weight. - way larger than the g35x - way quieter than the g35x *even* though the Michelin's are much better tires than the Goodyears runflats - Harman Kardon audio is very good - way more luxurious interior - steering wheel is much lighter than the G35x (and the 2014 is already sportier than 2011-2013). - predictable handling although the weight can be felt. - 33% better fuel economy than the G35x in real-world driving. More if I hypermile in Eco Pro. 2014 328i non-sport on 17" Continental RFTs - drove it for a week as a loaner - steering is even softer than my 5 series - feels more like a lateral move from the Infiniti G - N20 has a lot of torque. Felt just as spry as the G and the 535i - more "tossable" than the 535i. - noisier interior compared to 535i; similar to my G - interior quality was just OK. The wood looked cheap. The cup holders also looked cheap. I'm happy with my move but I've also matured and grown out of my rice rocket phase. You really have to test drive these cars before committing. For what it's worth, the IS350 F-Sport was very nice. I liked it more than the 3 series and less than my 5 series but would have been a reasonable option if I was looking for a lateral move. It's nimble like the G but has decreased NVH. A nicely equipped 435i ends up being as expensive as standard 535i. |

Wow, thanks for all the awesome info and replies! Thankfully, I haven't had any issues with the G(other than 1 unpleasant curb check, on my birthday no less ) and no "bucking" of the transmission.
After reading the replies, I think I'm leaning more towards the F10 now, and I also read a great thread about 535 v. 550. But I find myself more like GXAlan, getting out of my "have to go fast/launch it all the time" phase and into the "enjoy the driving but its nice to know the power is there when I want it" phase lol. What I find interesting is that for MY11 cars, the used 550's(while harder to find) are comparatively priced to an optioned 535, and that's before negotiations. My biggest challenge with looking for a used will be finding the right one, as I like the look of the M-Sport pkg and I love gadgets/toys so I would want it to have Tech/Prem/DA/HUD/Cold Weather, which it seems that just in my casual looking through dealer's online inventory and autotrader are not easy to come by. I also would probably look for an Alpine White, but most seem to come with Beige interior which I wouldn't be 100% opposed to, I would just rather find one in Black. I plan to go talk to my CA and see about test driving later this week, that way I can actually get a feel for it and see if it would be something I would still have "fun" driving. |

A 2011 car may have some issues noted with early builds such as excessive throttle delay, steering pulling to the right, floaty suspension and a few other things that you can easily read up on. Research before your test drive and if the car doesn't have any of these issues then you're good.

I did that and could not been any happier. Owned 2 G37s from 2008 to 2012 and bought a '13 535i. Loving it.
