Advice on replacement for totaled 530i

Lovely wife tried to load the 2004 530i on a guy's trailer with the tailgate still up. Thought it would be no problem getting it repaired. Estimate was $4k until the collision center started trying to find headlights. Adaptive headlights were $1,500 each. Insurance company (Safeco) said no way and totaled the car. Said Alabama law requires that if car damaged more than 75 percent of value, it must be totaled. Great car with sport package. Wife insists on getting another Bimmer. Scared of the 535i twin-turbos and related costs. Tend to keep a car a long time. Looking at 528i, either 2010 or 2011. Advice would be greatly appreciated.

The F10 isn't a twin turbo; it's a twin scroll...

All newer (USA F10) BMW's have a turbo (or 2 in the case of the 550)....

You would (I believe) need a 2010 or older car (6+ years old now).

I doubt that's the law, however that IS the policy of most, if not all, insurance companies...

2011 535  [0.00]
N55 inline 6 is BMW's bread and butter. It's the improved, more reliable N54. So a 535 you'll be more than happy. Go for 2011

^^Agreed, I wouldn't have touched the N54 with all the issues that motor had. However, the F10 with the N55 motor seems to be pretty reliable. That is why I replaced my E60 550 with an F10 535.

I have a 2011 going strong with about 50K miles so far. N55 is solid and the fuel pump is warrantied to 100K miles anyways.

Ditto on the N55 as reliable. Its why I drove an N52 328i after my 2007 530. Never wanted any part of that N54 or the N63.

That's not to say they are all bad and there are many n63 owners here that will tell you they never had an issue. To me the 550i over 80,000 miles tends to have a higher frequency. This is not my experience but from what I have read. Again, that's not to say there are plenty of happy trouble free owners.

The 550 is a great car but you may not need all that juice (plus the maintenance costs that go along with it).
I've had a the 535 as a loaner and it was plenty quick. As others have said, I6 = BMW. If I didn't want an M4 so bad the 535 would be my next ride.

Get an F80 M3 if you can. if you want to stick with the F10, then go with the same ones you got.
