Maintenance Contracts - worth it?

Hi,

Looking to get my first lease car through my company. I am one of 4 directors - 2 of them have brand new Audi A5s, one an old Honda Accord that will be changed next year and myself. I currently drive a Volvo S40, which has seen me proud, but is looking its age!

I want a 520d M-sport with a few goodies!!

I think the budget will be around the £650 a month mark, on a 4 year contract covering around 24K miles a year. I am pretty sure the audis are being leased with the maintenance contract, but I think they are a bit of a rip off. What does everyone else think? Could we pay for the 60K servicing package ourselves and avoid the middleman?

I really want to get as many bits and bobs on it as possible, so price is critical.

Thanks for reading.

James

It depends on the price, naturally, but generally here in the states any maintenance contract is pure frothing profit for the dealer.

If it's mostly the 60K service that concerns you, then I'd simply call up my favorite local independent BMW service specialist and ask him what he charges. It should be no different on the F10/F11 than on the E60 or E39. Compare that to the wildly inflated price that the dealer will ask for that and a few oil changes and decide from that point.

Enjoy the new F11!

Unfortunately using independents is a no go over here if you're on contract hire/lease. The contract hire company will have a clause in the contract that you only use authorised dealers for maintenance etc.

@jkharmer, as a partnership we run various vehicles (cars and vans), some with maintenance, some not. It depends on mileage and I'd say on 25k a year it would be worth going for especially if it includes tyres. It's also so much easier for budgeting. Have a look at www.comparecontracthire.com and have a play around with vehicles. It's currently showing an F11 M-Sport Auto with Business Media over 4 years on 20,000 miles per year including maintenance at £567.13 plus VAT per month. That price probably won't change if you add metallic because it's good for the residual. Obviously you'll know you can claim 50% of the VAT back.

That price is with FleetLine who are part of LeasePlan/Network. A very reputable company and the people I've ordered from. Talk to Amy Porter.

And BMW can't get near on price which didn't please the BDM at my local dealer. Shame really because he's done an awful lot of legwork. I've asked FleetLine to at least source the vehicle from him by way of a thank you.

Hi rich. Really appreciate that info. That is a great price. We have used lombard for vans and lex for the audis. I will get in touch after I have test driven one. This is happening tomorrow!

If you prefer to deal with someone face to face then try Mike Knowles at Yorkshire Vehicle Finance in Sheffield 0114 236 1818. They are brokers but deal with FleetLine/LeasePlan/Network and I know they can match their prices. He's on holiday this week, back Monday. Six vehicles so far with YVF. Four commercials, my wife's car and my current Saab.
