245x45x19 wheels
Think of buying a winter set of wheels from a friend. The tires that come with the rims are 245x45x19. I know that 2013 535xi that comes with 19" rims comes with 245x40x19.
will that extra 5mm thickness throw anything off? |

As long as you are not lowered, you won't have a problem with 245/45/19 tires on 19" wheels. I ran oversized 245/50/18 winter tires for several seasons on my 535xi with no problems.
As an aside, the difference is more than 5mm. The 45 (or 40 for stock 19" tire) is the ratio of the sidewall thickness relative to the tread width. A 45 tire means that the sidewall height is 45% of the tread width. Switching from a 40 to a 45 tire increases the sidewall by over 12mm, with a total tire diameter increase of about 1". Check out this tire size comparison link for making a comparison:

I have a feeling 245 is a bit too narrow for our 19" wheels. Whenever I accidentally get too close to the curve, the wheels take the hit. Have anyone tried 255 instead?

245/40r19 were the stock all seasons I’ve had since I got the car in 2011. Never had the curb problem.
I’ve had the 245/45r19 for 2-3 days and love them for why I wanted them. Definitely not as sporty as the all seasons but MUCH better on these crappy NY winter roads. I do try to dodge every little pothole or crack. They are also a lot more quiet than the all seasons. Let’s see how they hold up in snow. |
