530d GT Very hard suspension
Hi all,
I'm new to this forum so looking forward to getting involved... I took delivery of my 5GT back in March this year. I was given a demo car for a few days to help me make up my mind to order one as I had been considering another X5. I absolutely love mostly everything about the car except that I feel the suspension is very, very course. It feels way too hard for a supposedly luxury car especially on urban roads almost to the point that I feel embarrassed when I have passengers 1st impressions when people jump in are always nothing short of WOW but as soon as you head off on a journey you start to feel the rough ride. i have had it in to BMW twice now and they say they can't fault the car with 1 engineer telling me that the 5GT does have pretty hard suspension!! I don't have the dynamic drive fitted so it is just the normal spec (normal / sport/ sport +) I didn't notice the hard ride with the demo car which was the same specification as I ordered so I am thinking that I have an issue which BMW are refusing to admit??!! I feel that switching the car into Sport mode actually improves things slightly but it still does not give that Luxury ride I would expect Has anyone else had this problem and if so what can i do to improve things? Many thanks in advance Peter |

First thing you should do is to try out another 530d demo car in your dealer with exactly the same tires and tire size; and see if there is any difference.
I have heard of complaints about 20" or above tires causing harsh ride, but 19" should be better. If the demo car rides better, then there is something wrong with your car. If the demo car rides the same, then the only thing you can try is to use 18" rim (though it won't look as good) with 245/50 R18 non-run flat tires. That should give you a much smoother ride. |

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your problem. I have a 530d GT on standard 18" runflats, which I don't have a problem with, and I'm driving on a lot of bumpy rural roads with more than their fair share of potholes! On decent surfaces ie urban/motorways I find the suspension about right.Using sport mode actually firms it up.My guess is that the wheel size could be a contributing factor, but as someone else has asked, what are you coming out of? Hope you acclimatise to it or find a fault that can be rectified! |

Hi all, sorry about the delay in getting back on this, i never realised that I had any further replies from anyone
I have came out of a 2007 X5 with 19 inch run flats (although i changed them to non run flats due to excessive wear) I hadn't considered reducing my tyre pressure as has been suggested but will consider it. i feel as though the problem is a little intermittent thopugh as sometimes it seems really bad and other times not so... You really do begin to doubt yourself sometimes though |

Hi,
about 4 months ago, I sold my X5 and bought the GT. Main reason was the hard suspension of the X5 xdrive30d. Now with the 530d GT its much better, but remember BMW is NOT a Mercedes. But for now I'm very happy with my GT, and my next car will be again a GT with the 4 wheel drive...... John |

Thanks for the reply John...
Guys, I have driven BMW's for years now so i am well aware that they don't feel like the horrible spongy Mercedes. I have mainly driven models with Sports suspension so i am used to a firm ride. The ride in my GT is not firm, it is just far too crashy going over normal lumps and bumps at no more than 35mph. The last time it was in being checked they gave me a little 118d which was much smoother which cannot be right! Cheers Peter |

this sure sound like a tire pressure issue - not only have the pressures checked so they are as per the sticker in the door opening but make sure it is done with a gauge that has been checked

Harsh Ride
I have a 523i with the stock 17 inch rims on run flats and normal/sport/sport+ active suspension, but the ride is absolutely awful.
Its distressing since everything else with the car is amazing ... Also i have a constant vibration in the steering wheel, which turns into a violent shake when braking lightly at high speed since i bought the car new. Anyone else facing such problems? I have the 8 speed sport transmission with paddle shift setup... Thanks |

Rayan. Sorry to hear about the ride & steering wheel vibrations on your new ride. Sounds like it needs booking in with your garage to get things checked over.
Unfortunately, you have posted in the 5GT F07 forum so you may not get the response you were looking for from other F10 owners. You should re-post in the F10 forum. Good luck. Last edited by bickers1972; 11-06-2010 at 04:42 PM.. |

Have you thought that ambient temperature and/or wet roads have kept the tyres colder and harder 'some' days. Was it better in the warmer days of summer? BTW, there is comment on the cars without Adaptive Drive being 'crashy', particularly the rear end. HighlandPete |
