Good to see them doing this. I work at an independent dealer here in Portland and we've had 4 separate 2011 550's straight from BMW Financial and right around 50,000 miles come in and within a couple days of driving, 3 out of 4 had major issues. They've done injectors, pumps, programming, whole nine yards. Luckily we've still been under warranty, but seems pretty shoddy for a $60k+, top of the line car to start misfiring and throw into limp mode with no notice and to be stuck at the dealer for weeks. Thought we just got a bum unit, but after it happened with 2 others, it was clear this was a BMW issue.

Good on them for stepping up to try and make things right. Hope they work with folks that have dumped thousands in their out of warranty N63's to make things right with them as well.

Seems to me those ridiculous long(save the planet) Oil Change Intervals are coming back to bite BMW in the a$$!!!
Recently they reduced the OCI on some other engine(forgot witch one).

Any who.........the Value of these car is gonna drop like a stone!!!
I mean, C'mon who's running out picking one of these cars up?
I just feel bad for the unsuspected buyers that buy these cars, of those used car lots down the road

I'll keep changing my oil every 3k-4K miles Thank you very much.

As mentioned several times - THIS IS NOT A RECALL.

In fact, they don't go replacing all of those things - they check, and if needed, they replace. So unless they have reason to believe your timing chain has stretched, I don't think anything will be done to your car - so don't be expecting to have your dealer tear apart your engine without reason.

Now for the real news...

The battery is now a maintenance item. Every other oil change, while your car is under warranty, they will replace the battery. This applies to the N63 and N63tu and I suspect the S63 variants as well. Apparently the running of the cooling pumps/fans after the car is off, kills the battery over time.

The tech which I spoke to told me some items are going to replaced no matter what. Some items will be tested and only replaced after the test found to be faulty

Rallye BMW here on Long Island wasn't aware of the "N63 Customer Care Package" or any recalls associated with the N63. I gave the woman the bulletin and she found it. She told me they were waiting on the parts from BMW and once they have them, the letters will go out.

I've had my injectors and battery replaced once since 2011.

good luck all!

They didn't do a customer care for the n54, they just extended warranties. it seems like a lot of the same issues across both engines. the n63 issues seem to inspire a more proactive approach

Our vehicle just happened to already be at the dealer when this popped up on my phone yesterday. Forwarded this link to the SA and they hadn't even had an official notice from BMW on this. Had multiple clients come in asking about it but no documentation from BMW.

The N62 motors all suffer form various oil leaks, valve stem seals going bad. As time goes on, and these N63s are getting higher millage on them, I suspect to see the same issues. BUT since the N63s are turbo, owners will also get all the shitty issues that come from FI like carbon buildup along with problems mentioned in this service bulletin (injectors etc).

I feel terrible for any person who owns a higher millage N63 out of warranty. Sure these motors produce great power and are fun to drive, but all this FI tech, combined with long OCIs and advanced electronics are killing the reliability/longevity of these engines.

EDIT: Where the hell was BMW with a Service bulletin like this for the N54s!?!?!?

Your SA is lying or doesnt know a thing.
Even I have seen the documents and Video sent to all US dealers in December and im not even in the US or work for a dealer.

They are also all available online to anyone in a USA dealer via their usual SIB system login and it was mentioned in their monthly December dealer news, also available to all dealer technical employees.

Some SA's really shouldnt have their jobs

But I already replaced these items and it cost me a TON

I welcome comments and appreciate your advice on the following:

My 2010 X6M currently has 125,000 miles and had repeated problems while under the extended warranty.

Here is what I recall was done (there are more things, but I don't remember):
-Complete software on all modules was redone
-All injectors replaced (low power indication)
-Battery replaced
-Turbo cooler
-head unit for Nav
-Sparkplugs

Now I read that this is a part of the Service Bulletin and am wondering if my out of pockets will be reimbursed. Yes, I will certainly ask, but has anyone here gone out of pocket and is there anything you have done to get reimbursed?

Still love this car and appreciate any experience you can share.

Jim

Any parts and labour already done that are also on this service action will be reimbursed for. Its on the service action.
If it was done at another dealer you will have to provide proof of payment.

These though are not in the Service bulletin from your list
-Complete software on all modules was redone
-Turbo cooler
-head unit for Nav
-Sparkplugs

Except the poster has an X6M with the S63 so at this point, it's not part of the "care package". I spoke with my dealer yesterday who got in touch with their BMW rep and it was confirmed that the S63 motor is currently not part of this deal. Seems crazy considering most of the items affected are identical to what's used on the N63, and problem areas for the X5/6M as well.

I have a 2012 X5M and would expect similar treatment if not better since there have been documented issues also. May be the first time I will get rid of a car that I actually would rather keep.....really disappointing from BMW for buyers of 100k trucks.

My battery just started giving me a Battery Discharge light, will this be covered under, under this recall? They told me to come in early Feb for the work and they'll check everything. I don't know if my battery will hold up that long.

Interesting, just started getting battery discharge in the last month. (Daily now)

Immediately after shutting of engine, my accessories die as well.

Lights (exterior and interior) won't stay on with alarm unlock etc.

Had a few word things happen lately regarding electronics.. Fan speed in both zones wouldn't increases despite raising fan. That self corrected. Also received top and rear camera malfunctions while both seem to be working fine.

I have had the injectors and plugs replaced once already.

To its credit my 2011 Dinan s3 now has approximately 60,000 miles and drives without flaw. I am NOT a hard driver.

Time for a checkup! I won't let anything slide after reading what BMW says may need attention.

Do you usually only drive short distances ?

The battery change is actually under a separate service bulletin "SIB 61 30 14" which gives N55, N57, N63T, S63, or N74 engines a new battery every 2nd oil service. (while under warranty)

N63 gets one every oil service. (while under warranty)

So ask the dealer to check it out.
Or put a decent charger on the car for a good few hours ( eg Ctek charger) if you only do shortish distances regularly.

Just dropped off my 2012 550i for the service. The SA called it a "Recall" but it shows up on the printout as two separate "Service Campaign" actions. Looks like they'll end up checking everything on the list and replacing what's required. The SA said it could be at least 3 to 4 days. My car is a lease due back to them in six months (actually, a few weeks since they're waiving my last six payments) so I suspect they'll replace everything.

In the meantime, they were out of cars so they referred me to Enterprise for a car of "equal or higher class" as stated in the bulletin. When I got to Enterprise, they offered me this red thing. Needless, to say, I called back and got approval for a 328i. Still no where near equal to a 550i but at least I don't lose any of my daily functionality. I'm 6'3 220 -- really, a red bug?

This was kind of my thought as well. Didn't really think BMW would be selective about who got the notice....

Great suggestion, but I don't drive short distances, typically very long distances. Ironically, this occurred today after leaving the BMW dealership (Car was there 5 days for unrelated issues). When I left, I took the car to another shop and they swapped a cracked wheel for me, and then leaving there I got the first sign. I didn't think anything of it, until the it kept doing it. I called BMW they said its cause its cold out and your battery could be shot. I also called BMWNA and they said if I replace the battery and pay for it out of pocket, they will reimburse me after the recall stuff is completed.

Regarding Maintenance, I got screwed on that one since I'm not longer in warranty or Maintenance. Hopefully they'll cover it under the Recall, considering there's clearly a problem.

I do indeed have a CTEK charger' it's plugged into the Ferrari, which is parked at my parents house for the winter. Will have to see if I can park the BMW indoors there and swap the charger out... Will report back if I can manage.

A $50 gas card should be given as a courtesy after your respective N63 car goes in for this Bulletin.

ive got mine scheduled to go in soon, but so much for the promise of a loaner of equal or better class per all the press releases. They don't have ANY loaners at or higher than a 550. The best I will do is a 528 loaner. what a bunch of BS.
