BMW fuel additives

I've mentioned these on a previous forum. Popped into my dealership today to get some spare wiper blades (£56 in case you were wondering how much) and saw a leaflet. I asked the part guys about these additives and he stated they should added to every tank of fuel. The cost of these additives were £13 - so quite a bit of money.
I scanned in the leaflet for your information in case you have not seen it. I've decided to stick with premium diesel which supposedly has cleaning additives in anyway (presumably better or more than standard diesel?)

I too picked up a can about a month back.

Can't say I have noticed any difference... but I'll believe the blurb that BMW have put out.

I do seem to recall, that Honest John had done some research on this. Can't remember the details.. but I think it endorsed these cleaning products... r that's what I remember.

I wonder what is so special about this to command such a premium over Miller's Diesel Power additives?

I used Miller's power additive in my 335d that had had the DPF removed, quite surprising how much extra smoke was generated when it was added to the fuel tank. I'd be very wary of using it in a car that has it's DPF in tact, guess there is a reason for the sticker on the fuel flap saying "no additives"!

How do you come to that conclusion?

Are you saying injection equipment manufacturers, for example Delphi and Stanadyne, are marketing fuel additive product with test data which is spurious, even fraudulent?

BMW's additive uses one of the worlds most advanced deposit control additives, a 'detergent' manufactured by BASF from the Kerocom/Keropur range.

Google Slick 50. This was the marketing departments dream in the 1970s. Introduce some science / technology into the marketing blurb and millions will fall for it. Did you know that the main ingredient of a number of branded injector cleaners is paraffin?

Unlikely, TBH. As a professional chemist and chemical engineer, I would suggest that it is unlikely that all fuel additives are snake oil. AFAIK BASF supply Shell for their V-Power Nitro+ diesel.

More here:

Yes, it's marketing but there's technology behind it.

I don't doubt the technology; I doubt the effectiveness of putting a relatively insignificant amount in a tank of diesel. It *might* help prevent build up of contaminants in the first place, if used from day one, but to suggest it miraculously cleans and rejuvenates an engine is bollocks. Anyone who has decoked a 16V head will tell you the effort involved in removing the carbon deposits.

not tried but seem to recall the wheeler dealers episode. If I remember correctly it improved the emissions quite a bit. Quite a new product I believe.

the garage I used didn't have emissions testing equipment so cant see the before and afters.

but will see how fuel consumption changes - should be improved. car was 10 years old with 43,000 miles on it.

so hopefully cleaned a lot of shit out.
