2 days , 2 goodyear excellence tyre burst
Started as an exciting 1200 kms road trip however ended up costing me money for the hotel stay due to extra night halt ($400), cost of 2 new tyres ($800 for both)
On the 525D F10 , Goodyear excellence 225 / 55 / R17 is the standard option supplied by BMW. The roads here are pretty bad, but this was not my first road trip. I have done probably 40,000-50,000 on my other BMW's on similar road conditions. But all prior trips have been on Bridgestone Runflats. The first tire burst (front left ) happened around 10pm , about 50 kms before the destination. Poor visibility due to oncoming traffic on a 2 lane road , and i hit a pothole at around 100-120 kmph I managed to drive at reduced speed with cut sidewall (picture below) to the destination. And next day was lucky enough to find one dealer who had a similar tyre in stock (only one in the city, and this city had no bmw dealership) And then the 2nd day while returning back, had a repeat of the same situation as the first tyre burst. same front left tyre, same speed, and similar pothole. Called the bmw dealer as i was around 30 kms from the nearest one. They came within an hour with a full wheel , and i was able to get a new tyre from the dealership next morning and drive back to my city (mumbai) I have anyways ordeded the space saver tyre for now. I am confused if i should switch all 4 tyres to Bridgestone Potenza run flats or Non run flats. Anyone had similar experience with goodyear run flats being too fragile? |

The 2nd tyre was purchased from some local tyre shop , although same spec but not sure how old it was etc. And this one didnt hold up well after the sidewall cut but BMW dealer came within an hour to my location on the highway. Not bad. I am going to get the space saver spare next week. |

I hit about a 3 inch 'imperfection' on a street in Chicago (around the corner from where I live) - and ripped the front right Goodyear rft after having my 550 for about a week - I must of driven this same street hundreds of times on my previous 335 with Potenzas and no issues - I bit the bullet and upgraded to 20' wheels with Hankook tires - and ordered a spare - in the interim, I'm driving around with one of the stock wheels as a spare...
My advice - when you can - replace those POS rfts...and kudos to you for driving in India - I cabbed from Pune to Mumbai a couple years ago - don't think I could have driven it myself without killing a few people, including myself...

Almost 4000 miles and no issues yet. I hit a pretty decent sized pothole going about 40mph and was scared shitless because of this forum! lol I checked and there were no bubbles or any other damage.

And there are some expressways safe enough to max out the car. Mumbai pune expressway, the traffic is bumper to bumper during rush hours, i understand what you must have gone through! |

Good to see your car survived after hitting that pothole - i hit a small one the other day going around 35kmh and the loud bang was enough to make me wonder if I broke something...but 120kmh? That might have required a trip to the dentist to replace fillings and perhaps a new pair of underwear....
