QUESTION: Run Flat Tires Optional in Germany?

Anyone know if Run Flat tires are optional in Germany?

If so, are non-Run Flat tire cars equipped with spare tires or the mobility kit?

Even if non RFTs are optional in Germany, I don't think that the F10 was built to accommodate a spare. So, my guess is no. Still, don't take my word or it. I think that a bit of research on Google would help you out.

Good luck finding out OP!

Here in the UK, mobility kits are fitted to BMW models which don't come with RFTs as standard. (F30/31 320d ED, M135i, being examples). Many cars in Europe come without RFTs and only have mobility kits, although some do have a cavity for an optional space saver.

There are space saver wheels available for most BMW models, but have to be placed in the trunk space, as there is no space in the under floor cavities.

Thanks, HighlandPete.

So in the UK the F10 and F01/02 come with Run Flat tires as standard?

Still wondering about Germany...

German F10 LCI brochure appears to indicate RFTs are optional. Certainly has the 'optional equipment' box next to the description, pages 36/37, rather than the 'standard equipment' box we have in the UK brochure.

German configurator shows as option. Although most standard wheel packs show with runflats. In german the word your looking for is Notlaufeigenschaften

Runflats are standard in Germany, as in most if not all markets around the world
There is no space for a spare (X5 has option for a very small spare)

Why the conflicting information?

Hmm; okay; is this a recent change on BMW's part?

Are they starting to distance themselves from run flats?

AFAIK they've been an option in Germany from the time they were introduced. Some US market cars (especially the M cars) have been sold for a number of years now with non-RFT, no-spare configuration. I don't think RFT is fading. On the contrary I think it's being more widely adopted.

Hmm; thanks, but all very confusing.

Too bad wasn't an option in the US from the start as well.

The German market offers a much wider range of option choices, but at much higher prices. For the difference in base price of the 528i between Germany and the US (especially after you load up the German car with the US standard equipment) you could buy a lifetime supply of tires, and then some. So if you don't like run flats, ditch them. You're still way ahead.

Wouldn't mind if Run Flats were an option, and very expensive at that.

Why are comparable German market models more expensive anyway?

So tax aside, MSRP is different too?

What's the rationale behind that?

Also, is tax incorporated into the price in Germany, whereas it's added on after in the US?

So, removing tax, can we figure out the price difference on comparable builds?

Just built this:

2014 535i
Jet Black Paint
Dakota Black Leather
M Sport Pack
Cold Weather Pack
Driver Assistance Pack
Premium Pack
Harmon Kardon Sound
Side and Top View Cameras

Total: $65,050

What does this go for in Germany, pre-tax?

Even the base price for the 535i with 6MT is about $60,800 pre-tax in German.
I haven't calculated the cost of the options, but it got to be over $80,000 in total.
