This. Once BMW followed Merc down the path of bastardizing their specialty brand onto every car it lost it's mojo.

I'm not so sure.
In europe, one in three run of the mill Bimmers (318d, 116i, 523i etc) come in M-pack kit, including all the silly M-badges.
Still no one confuses these cars with true M Bimmers.

But hey let's face it, BMW sells products for the masses. There's no exclusivity in the first place.

First, the E12 M535i

Then the E28 M5 & E28 M535i. The M5 has the M1 engine (pretty much), the M535i had the motor from the 6 series (IIRC).. the important thing, is they are two different models. M5 had no body kit, M535i did.

Then the E24 M6/M635CSi.. these were the same model, badged differently for different markets.

Also, consider.. the 850CSi vehicle documentation used to read M850CSi (IIRC)...

So, it's not that the naming thing would be without precedent.

Not ALL the silly M badges, they wear M-emblems on the bits that from the M-sport package, but they don't come with M badges on the boot.... (do they?)

Here's a translation of the original article:

The rumored for ages: BMW comes with a diesel M5. This car will be called not M5 but M550d. Perhaps because not there's not supposed to be a diesel M5, but perhaps also because the M550d has a lot less power. The new diesel produces "only" 381 hp.

The production of only 381hp is a bit disappointing. According to rumors, the car which was to have at least 400 horsepower. Moreover, it is not much more power than the Alpina and Hartge manage to acheive from the BMW diesel. Perhaps it is time for BMW to do something sporting with their diesels. Alpina has been doing this for a while with the D3 and D5. Hartge is also not far behind, while Schnitzer earlier this year has transformed a Z4 with an ecodiesel into sports car. In short, everyone does it, except BMW itself.

The M550d has a 3.0 liter six cylinder diesel engine, which we already know from the 530d and 535d. The latest version, however, the engine has three turbos. This produces an output of 381 hp and a torque of over 700 Nm. The top speed is - as always - limited to 250 kph. Acceleration figures are not yet known, but with the huge torque and four-wheel drive, a quick sprint is possible.

We have not made up these figures ourselves, they come from a presentation from BMW Netherlands to their dealers. Nevertheless, spokesman Mark Loojenga remained tight lipped: "In general I can not comment on media speculation."

According to the same dealer presentation, the engine will not be restricted to the M550d. The engine will pop up in the X5 and X6. These versions will go through life as M50d. The production of fast diesels is expected to start in March.

*I averaged several different Dutch translations to make this somewhat readable in English.

The output is not bad in my opinion, better nombers than audi's and merc's v8 diesel engines with 4l + capacity

I would definitely prefer the M5.
If you take a m5 thats is around 340 000 USD in Norway before any equipment.
550ix is around 245 000
550xdat around 190 000(Just an estimate on what numbers I have seen)

It is not going to be an M, but something like m535i as somebody has been saying. I think it is OK that they use that. It is not a normal f10/f11 and it is not an m5. Something in between.

I do not understand why some people believe the M550d to be a serious competitor to BMW M5? To begin with, the price for the M5 is almost 50% higher than that for the 550i in Sweden at least. IMO the M550d will probably be a serious competitor to 550i or 550i xDrive...and like someone said, I think it is very unlikely that BMW will market the M550d in the US :-(

I could definitely live with 516 ft-lbs. of torque and AWD. Bring it on.

Could it be country specific because of local tex regulations?

Anyway, my fully loaded 535d costs EUR 120.000 in the Netherlands.
The base price of the M5 is EUR 132.000.

I'm just guessing but a fully loaded M550dX could be somewhere around EUR 135.000.

So, IMO a not so fully loaded M5 is definitely an alternative to the M550dX.
