NBT retrofit & emulator - is coding needed?

I read a lot about NBT retrofit but I couldn't find definite answer to one question:

If I retrofit NBT into my 5 Series (2014 LCI) do I need coding in order to activate navigation or emulator is enough? What I need coding for in that case and do I need coding at all if I install emulator box?

Please, advice. Thanks.
