License Plate Holder

Any advice on this? I'm still waiting on my custom plates so I can still enjoy a plateless front bumper. But good ol' California requires them. And I'd rather go with the law (Don't mind my illegal tint lol)

My options are:
Drill a normal center holder in
Offset tow hook holder
Attach it to the lower grille section???

I haven't had a front plate in over 17 years without a hitch. Even been pulled over a couple/4 times with no problems.

I would take a chance; after all, it's only a fix-it-ticket.

+1 and get a tow hook mount, so if u do get a fix a ticket, you put the plate on show the cop and then take it off...will cost you $15...

I just don't even want to get pulled over once haha. I'll go with it for a little while and see how uncomfortable I get.

If you're going with a plate, drill it on. The tow hook plate looks out of place and JDM.

I vote for no plate.

on my e39 as well as on this car i've ran without a front plate always (basically since 2004)

got a ticket 2x

1) my e39 was parked in SF in the Haight Ashbury district for approx 10 hrs, even though i left that area to meet friends, my car stayed there in a 3 hr parking spot for 10 hrs (I kept re-upping the meter via the app on my phone). This is like getting a fired on my day off...and i've heard of SF cops doing this shit, giving you tickets for stuff while parked.

2) On my f10, in June 2016, i was driving down 101 (or as you all call it THE 101) from SF to SJ, and the cop couldn't get me on radar, for speeding (there was a point where i was overtaking someone and i hit 90) he pulled me over for no plate. Basically looking for a reason to pull me over

both times fix a ticket

for the e39 i'd just tape the license plate holder to my front bumper using double sided tape and then show the cop and remove it ....

for the f10 i decided to get the tow hook mount (as i had to buy a front license plate holder anyways), and leave it on to show the cops, and then pull it off

god i miss that 540i

sorry i had to whore a pic of her...

It all depends on where you live and what you are comfortable doing. Like other people said, you can and will be pulled over just for the missing plate. I personally thing the tow hook is a little JDM. I have the plate center mounted and never had an issue with it. In Seattle/Tacoma, they'll give out missing front plate ticket just if car is parked on the road so better safe that sorry.

Yeah that's how I'm leaning too. Even with mods, I find the BMW too luxurious for the JDM feel haha.

I suppose I could just double-side tape the holder to my bumper no?

no, the last thing you'd want is that flying off at highway speeds and causing damage/injury

Ditto, have'nt ran a plate in 20+ yrs, but i do have the tow hook mount ready in case! 20 bucks on Ebay
i think the tow hook would look cooler too if you MUST run a plate, also
there are just TOO many w/o front plate for the cops to worry about .......But if you are the unlucky one Dont tape it on, the officer will look if you did that, they're not stupid....

I have PPG on the front bumper and used 3M mount tape. No profile to stick out and holds up forever. Last car had the same tape and lasted over 7 years.
It can also be removed.

Just drill and worry about other things in life. I mean why throw away the money on potential tickets. Having bumper drilled and installing the plate is really not such a big deal in my opinion, plus it's the law where you and I live.

I got pulled over and was given a fix-it-ticket in Nebraska for no front plate; I guess he couldn't get me for speeding (THANK YOU radar detector!)... Anyway we were visiting our son in Santa Cruz and there were 3 cops at the park near his apartment so I put th front plate on the dash and went over to have then sign-off on the ticket (The Nebraska cop checked the "no rear plate" on the ticket). I explained that he pulled me over for no front plate but checked the rear plate on the ticket and asked if he would sign-off that I had a rear plate. He advised me that the front plate had to be secured to the front bumper and the dash trick wasn't enough. He didn't seem to care much that I didn't have a front plate. I have heard about certain jurisdictions ticketing parked cars for no front plate. I think it depends on the mood of that particular LEO that day...

Then again we went to a Renaissance Faire at Balboa Park (around 1980) and the parking lots were full so many, many, many people were parking on the grass. I figured they couldn't tow all those cars so we parked along side everyone else. I was right about that, but they had no problem issuing parking tickets!!

No front plate.

I'm in CA also, and have my front bumper clean. In 3-1/2 years with my F10, I've gotten tickets for no plate twice. I've not been pulled over for just missing the plate, only gotten the tickets when it's been parked on the street. It's a $15 fix-it ticket. So I then attach the plate to the lower mesh grille with zip-ties, find a cop, he signs off on it, and then take the plate off again. So I only need to keep the plate on for a day.
