I can envision a 550d but not an M550d. BMW hasn't bastardized the M brand like that since the 80s and I don't think they would do it again.

I think BMW could be putting turbo boost buttons in future cars, seriously.

What else could an electric turbo be for?

This is awesome news! Diesels are way more efficient than those stupid hybrids. Plus it'll have an engine you can actually listen to as you drive. Can't wait for them to come to the US.

What's better than a twin turbo motor??? A third turbo of course!

What were you thinking pinky. That's the plan to take over the world. More turbos under the hood.

It is good to be delivered only in an M form (Pack) to be clearly identified than normal versions.
It will be a diesel revolution with low capacity (Merc & Audy have heavy v8 engines)

Diesel is more of 20-30% more efficient.

Right now, where I live, I'm seeing diesel at about 10-20 cents a gallon cheaper than premium, since most don't/shouldn't buy regular for their BMWs. Yes, at times I've seen it a nickel to a dime more expensive, maybe 25 cents, but that makes it less than 10% more expensive in the worst case, while on the efficiency side there is about 15% less fuel consumption. The math proves the purpose.....cheers.

I give the same treatment to smart cars. M550dx sounds awesome although I doubt the US will ever see this car.

These are all bonafide M cars and they have the M naming format for SUVs. 1M is an excusable exception.

But placing M before a 3 numbered BMW is not an M car naming convention. Last time it was used was on the M535 which paled in comparison to the E28 M5 and in reality was no different to our M-Sport models today - i.e. the engine was not an M-Power engine. It was just a car with M-Technik bodykit.

I also get mixed feeling with Diesel motors, the petrol with always out preform the diesel in performance, but the Diesel has way better mpg, so i guess it balances out in price. In the passed the Diesel versions have been 10k cheaper than its petrol counter part!

Great engine and idea, but another "stand alone" variant?

PLEASE, for the love of GOD, someone tell the Marketing guys at BMW to "Step away from the mound of Yeyo"

Cheers,

Out perform???
BMW's figures:
535i (petrol) 0-60 6.1 sec
535d (diesel) 0-60 5.7 sec
I guess that says all we need to know

Math rules again, 3 MPG differential doesn't add up to 20-30%.
In reality:
F12 640i (3 litre petrol) - 23mpg - 1k+ miles.
F10 535d (3 litre diesel) - 36mpg - 9k+ miles.
Figures obtained over all types of road conditions, but with a fair degree of 'spirited' driving and are in UK gallons but that doesn't alter the percentage benefit with diesel. I very easily get 40+mpg in my 535d on long highway runs.

The new X5 35i has an 8-speed tranny and other engineering design changes to improve efficiency. The 35d is one generation behind. Diesels typically are 20-30% more efficient over similar gas counterparts.

The proper comparison probably is the 35i to the 40d, which is not available in the US, but has the 8 speed tranny in Europe. Although the 40d kills the 35i in off-line acceleration (the 40d is rated >300 hp and about 450 ft/lbs. torque), and the real comparison should be between the 40d and the 50i V8, where the diesel will trounce the V8 in fuel economy.

And yes, the US tax structure on fuel discourages diesel use, though lately diesel has run about 10-20 cents cheaper than premium here in Illinois. If we were serious about cutting oil consumption, we'd change the tax structure to encourage diesel and reap the 20-30% efficiency gain. And avoid Lithium-Ion batteries, which are an environmental disaster to manufacture. Sigh. Instead we hand out money to farmers to produce ethanol instead of food.

I had this same conversation with a guy at a rest stop while driving my diesel MB. The reality is diesel cost about the same as or less than the premium gas most of us put in our cars. The other up side is the next time a hurricane creates a gas shortage, you'll still be able to fill up.

The new turbo petrol engines are more fuel efficient and have better torque than older normal aspirated ones.
The prices for diesel cars are higher than petrol ones.
After all depends on the number of kilometers/miles done per year or if u are spending more time driving is the city or on the highway.
