2006 E55 AMG, good or bad buy???

I am looking to get my wife a new car. She has an 06' IS350 currently but we need a little more room for our two little girls.
She spotted a used 2006 E55 AMG that she really likes.

Does anyone have experience with these and can give some insight on whether these are a good buy used or not?

I would be getting an extended warranty for sure with it, but just want to know if these are known as problematic or not.

Thanks so much for the advice,

Brandon

The W211 chassis is a great car. The bread and butter for Benz from 03-09 before the switch to the W212 in 2010. My family had an 04 E320, an 07 E350, and an 09 E350 with no problems. No AMGs in my family. Does she want/need that much power? 469-HP / 516-TQ is quite a bit. The torque is amazing and it's a literally a cruise missle from launch. What's great about AMG's are that they are very docile around town and comfy when highway cruising. Good family hauler. Do a google search for W211 E55 problems and you'll be sure to have a few threads, as with every car. I know that the 07-09 W211 E63 is a bit more reliable. Are you buying from a MB dealer, a off-brand dealer, or private party?

Thanks for posting the edit, was about to do the same!

@Brownblazer, It's ironic that we're both in the market for one!

The research on other MB forums so far have shown both extreme ends of the spectrum. Some say 'had I not been in warranty, I would not have the car' others say 'the car is bulletproof'. So it's hard to say if it's problematic, but I doubt your wife needs a car like this. Maybe the E550?

I think with a warranty you can't go wrong, but I also read finding a warranty for an older W211 will be difficult because some companies know they'll be shelling out the ass for claims.

Keep me posted and I'll do the same.

It's still a 6 year old, $90k Mercedes Benz; it's going to cost a pretty penny for any kind of servicing.

Good luck. The thing is a bullet train. I don't know why your wife needs all that power! Be aware, that supercharged V8 is gonna pull 10-20mpg on 93.

I don't think you will see much of the 20 MPG with that kind of power

I agree with everyone. E55 is unnecessarily powerful. Also, do you really want your wife to have a faster car than you?

like 4 of my friends have them around here, for whatever reason. all 4 of them have had nothing but problems with them. take that for what it's worth, but they have all been stranded more times than they would ever admit.
