535d Possible Turbo Failure
Hi Guys,
I wonder if anyone might be able to shed some more light on this problem and whether it has happened to anyone else. Driving along a local b road and the speed limit changed from 40 – 60. When I tried to accelerate nothing happened. The car changed down but no sudden urge, just a really slow increase in speed and a funny clattering noise from the engine. Pulled over and took a look under the bonnet, no obvious strange noises. I then pull away and again have no power. I did then get a warning about Drivetrain malfunction and the power is reduced BMW emergency services believe that the turbo has blown, can this really happen to a car that is 6 months old with 8500 miles on the clock? Apparently this part costs £ 1700.00. Has anyone heard of this before? I am really upset by this major failure and it has ruined my whole weekend |

Yes, it is possible to have it these problems this early.
My '09 750 had multiple fuel pump failures and faulty turbo's, got rid of it before 18,XXX. sorry to see you having problems though :/

With the 3 turbo failures i have seen/been in the car with ( 2 x 320d and 1 VW Polo TDI ) the failure resulted in a huge cloud of white smoke emanating from the car.
Maybe its just a component failure

I did not see any smoke. The power just drained from the car. The BMW emergency technician thinks it is the turbo though. He seems to think that the impeller has broken off or failed in some other way.
The dealer has had it for the day and not even taken a look at it. |

In the context of passenger cars, as opposed to trucks, tanks or ships, I would hardly call a 3 litre engine "small".
