What does DEC do?

If you have the non-sport automatic and non of the dynamic options, what is the difference between setting the DEC to sport and putting the gear selector into sport mode?

So when you put the gearlever in S mode you only change the gearbox setting, and when you put the DEC in sport it also affects the steering. Thanks!
