Driver restraint system malfunction
Hi,
Got this warning today on my Dec. 2011 530d xDrive F11: Driver restraint system malfunction. Wheel buttons don't work anymore and turning the wheel makes some strange noise like repetitive 'clic' sounds that come from behind the wheel. It looks like it's a cable or connector that got disconnected from behind the wheel and that it's hampering / preventing the free movement of the wheel. Seen this before ? Can my wife still drive the car safely until we get this fixed at the dealer ? I called the assistance this evening but they didn't call back. |

Most likely your slip-ring (item that provides connectivity between Air Bag and the rest of the harness while steering wheel can still turn) either got disconnected or wires broke off. You do need to take it to a dealer to have it checked and replaced defective parts.
I wouldn't drive the car as damaged items may lock your steering wheel during driving. Have it towed to a dealer. The least you can do if you are mechanically inclined is to check it yourself. Pop Air Bag out and take a look. Even if you fix it yourself dealer needs to be involved to have the code cleared.

There are two ways I'm aware that this can happen, there might be others.
Driver or passenger seat getting wet and seat mat sensor confuses the system, warning will likely go away after the seat dries. Cleaning up your car and moving your seats every way possible (too far back/forward or too high/low) might require "re-calibration/reset" at the dealer (silly I know, but this actually happened to me). Hope this helps. |

I definitely haven't been cleaning my car. It was sitting in my garage for a couple hours (4) then I went to store and it did it out of know where. I'll try to find some sort of seat recalibration.
What's the clicking in steering wheel then if it's from seat? |

Today the clicking sound had a large pop when I was turning to park in a parking spot. Now none of my steering wheel controls work. Paddle shifters either.

Slip ring issue but have to replace whole unit
Not sure why BMW made it like this.
BMW put easily break part into the expensive unit and ISTA informed " it must be replaced whole unit". Slip ring is flexible flat ribbon cable located inside of SZL module (steering column switch module) and provide power & signals to air bag, horn and other function switches on the steering wheel. E serise has seperate slip ring module and can easily replace it but F serise has one whole unit and you have to replace whole SZL module ($550) + Labor + Reprograming fee. You can re-solder cable if you can but personally I couldn't do that. I'm pretty sure most of F10 slip ring will be break within 3-7 years because it is a moving part and made by cheap ribbon cable. I checked mine and found both cables (it has 2 ribbon cables) are broken into 6 parts (see picture.). |

Just had this happen and the same warning signal/clicking noise occurred.
Took it by the dealer. The preliminary diagnosis is broken clock spring, whatever the hell that is. Dealer said safe to drive, except the airbag has now been disabled. I'll post more when I take it in for service. Anyone else been all the way down this road? Bill

For anyone happening upon this thread, the clock spring is considered by Route 66 to be part of the restraint system, and not covered.
I think they are right.
