Why are you US guys so negative?!

No need to be afraid of the M exclusivity as these are for NOT coming to US.
But some of the gasoline models will start to make it to the US starting with the x1 m35i xdrive - http://e84.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=649651.

I say bring it on. Too many of you guys care too much about badging and designation. Who cares as long as the cars perform and look great.

This M550d is somehow paired with 550i in terms of performance, same for the 535d with 535i same on the new 525d with the new 528i....
I don t know how many of you understood this corespondence

M5 is on a complete other level in terms of sporty driving, dynamics!

For the european market these v8 petrol engines have a very low level of sales so BMW offered the wright alternative (M550d)!

Everything is done by taking into account the prices for fuel, the cost of the final product and the benefits: it's clear that for the moment these diesel engine cars can t have a very good price in US so BMW will just waste money trying to adapt these cars for NA market!

I personally love the idea of this car.

With all this volleyball-ruckus about the M'ness of the car, will this new line of models carry the WBAXXX or WBSXXX VIN numbering?

Torture for NA Market

I would love a 5 series diesel, the X5 40d that has been in production in Spartanburg with an 8 speed transmission for well over a year now, a 1 series diesel for all of my business travel, etc. This is serious B.S.

I would buy the X5 550d or whatever the hell they call it right now - but NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! I can't get one. I really think BMWNA may be run by idiots.
I agree with the lack-of-North American-diesel sentiment, but you can add the lack-of-North-American-touring models to that as well. It is bad enough to see the beautiful new 5 series wagon on this forum and not be able to buy it in the states, but now we have to be tauted by an M550D. Instead our market is offered the AZTEC/5GT?? BMW customers should be more sophisticated than the cross over trend seekers. As for the wagon situation, the consolation prize is a 328 touring...

Cheers!

I drive an average of 25,000 miles a year and to have the performance of a 550 with better MPG than a 535 is perfect in my book.
That's one nice ride you got there.

Interesting comparison, 5-series GT/Pontiac Aztec. Someone said the GT looks like a Saab 900, not very flattering (for the Saab!) I wonder if the guys in lab coats in Munich have heard this. Hopefully they have so they can put an end to the GT:s misery...

After reading this thread and doing some research I'm still confused. Besides the engine and the "M-tuned" suspension, are there any parts on this car that are different from my 550xi?

With 3 x turbochargers, BMW should have been able to get something flatter.
Please show me a flat curve of a diesel engine.

You never get a flat curve on a diesel, you get a curve which is a lot, lot less peaky than this M550d engine and a curve where maximum torque arrives much earlier than the 2000rpm in this engine.

Of course there isn't a flat curve on a diesel. You finally get it.

On a serious note, don't worry about the high peak, as you mention it, there is a gearbox and a differential to take care of that. It's absolutely normal for a high performance engine. We're only talking about a "puny" 3 litre engine here. Yes it produces it's max torque @ 2k rpm, but it also has ~700nm @ 1750, and ~650nm @ 1500. You would love to drive that! I would!

p.s. If something, I'm surprised they managed to keep the max torque all the way to 3k rpm!

This engine is a masterpiece for sure!
Paired with the sport auto 8 speed gearbox it's developed to give a smooth/ sporty drive with an incredible low fuel consumption

So BMW still needs to come out with a diesel that corresponds to the M5.

It will have four turbos, and it will be called:

There was a test of the M550D online at AutoCar it was posted this morning but it has now been taken down, I wonder why, basically it kills the M5 in all respects except 0-62mph, it's reportedly a monster.

It sure is Unfortunate that these models wont make it to the U.S. Sucks!
Why does BMW do that? Show no love the U.S.!!!

M550d. 73 miles to the gallon?? Damn!

http://www.insideline.com/bmw/5-seri...rst-drive.html

Read the comments below. Someone mentioned that the car could go 73 mpg! Crazy! Crazy...

If that's the case (73 MPG), WE REALLY NEED THE M550d here, considering gas is so expensive here.

Is that correct though?? 73 mpg?? If you work it out, you get around 36 mpg. I don't know how the guy who commented on insideline got 73 mpg.
