255 square set-up on 8inch width wheel ( 350m style)
Hi,
I'd like to check what implications I'd have by moving my car towards a squared set-up on the 350m style alloys (18x8 Fronts, 18x9 Backs). I recently got the set of alloys and tyres for €400, the front tyres were shocking the backs are 6mm and evenly worn! From the factory these wheels come with 245/40/18's on the front and 275/40/18s on the back. What should I be aware of by moving to a 255 square set-up, and a 255 front 275 back set-up? I've a price of €140 incl fitting for 2x partworn (6mm) 255/40/18 bridgestone RFT's and I'm hoping to pick them up tomorrow and eventually put it square, when the time comes. After getting this quote I called a much more legit tyre shop, who advise against 255 on the front due to the multilink suspensions and that BMW would advise against it according to them. Any opinions on switching to 255 on the front, while keeping to 275 on the back? Then later moving to a square 255 set-up. |

I am currently running this setup (255 all around on stock rims 350m 18") for winter, and it works and looks great. The stock tires were Continental3 RFT 245-275 but I got rid of them. I have 20mm Macht Schnell black spacers with the rears because the OEM rear offset 44 was something.. I just couldn't look at it.
What is important with the square setup, is that you can rotate tires. Even with the xDrive, BMW transmission deilvers 60% of torque to the rears so wear is higher there. Aesthetically the 255 fits perfectly the 9" rim and a bit meaty for the 8" one. The 275 is a bit donut on the 9" rim (fits the 9.5" best). So if you go for a simple and practical setup, both 255-255 and 255-275 are OK. |

Exactly what I wanted to hear Valbmw, this is brilliant news for me I'll go pick up the 255's front tyres tomorrow and run 255 on the front, 275 on the back until I need to replace all four corners and go square!
I guess I'll also have to look for some quality hubcentric spacers down the line! |

Technically, the 8" wheel is about 0.5" too narrow for a 255 tire. a 245 would be better suited for an 8" wheel. As you can see, there are others who run it, but just know that, technically, its a bit too wide.

255/45-18, 1% taller than OEM 8.5" wheel as recommended, 8-9.5" allowed 255/40-18, 2% shorter than OEM 9" wheel as recommended, 8.5-10" allowed I.e. a square 255/45-18 setup will fit fine on staggered style 350 wheels. The 255/45 is also much closer to OEM tire size compared to 255/40. |

I ran a 255/40/17 tire quite successfully on a 17X7.5" wheel.

I don't doubt that its been done. I'm just saying that, from a technical point of view, its too wide and a 245 would be better suited.
