My car has been in three times already and, as has been described by others, I went from a severe pulling to the right to a vague, drifty and dead feel steering. Today the dealer has a regional tech in the shop to take another look at this problem and the very sluggish transmission issue.
In normal city driving the transmission sounds and feels like it's always a couple of gears higher than it should be.... driving me crazy- feels like when I was learning to drive my first stick and missed the 3rd gear and went into 5th instead. |

This is completely normal. It's the way this transmission has been programmed. Shift it over to Sport Mode.

"Normal"/"Within specs", etc. etc. - BMW speak for "sorry we built a sub par car that you paid so much $$$ for. Our excuses our plentiful and free - help yourselves - "

I don't buy the excuse that this is normal. They've reset the tranny once already and for a few weeks it's fine and then this agrravating condition gets progressively worse.
The excuse that I've heard from the shop foreman is that the tranny is learning an adjusting to my driving style.... thi si total BS. Like I said, my commute involves city driving with traffic congestion at times, so I don't have a choice but to drive the way I do - I can't be gunning the throttle to keep the RPM up out of fear that the tranny will "adjust". I asked why they can't just lock down the setting and I haven't received an answer yet. |

Received a call from the dealership. According to the service advisor, the download would not take. They are going to try again tomorrow. How long do you think it will take them to get this done?....based on the other post, probably a week or two.
The gave me a 328 loaner that is low on oil. Light comes on after a few miles of driving. |

Received another call from the dealer. They can not figure out why the car is still pulling to the right. They have a message into BMWNA....they said that a technician will need to come to the dealer with a laptop to reprogram the car. Apparently I have a recall download and a "pulling to the right" download.
Wonder how much longer I will have to wait. The only good thing is that the SA calls me everyday with an update that the car is "too new" and they can not figure out the problem.. |

Just got the car back yesterday. No improvement.
Now, I will say this though, they didn't really work on the steering. My car was in almost an entire week for essentially an electronic brain fart. When I brought it in, there were multiple fault codes and many systems "out of calibration". The shop foreman that I spoke to at length told me they weren't sure if it had always been that way or if it had gotten that way due to low voltage. Long story short, they ended up re-loading the entire software suite and re-setting all of the adaptations. He said that when he drove the car, he didn't really feel the pull or wandering, but it is very hard to do on the roads around here unless you get on the highway. The car has to go back in for an ordered trim part, so he mentioned that he wanted to see if re-doing all of the software had made a difference and if not, they would address when they had my part in. So back in it will go, this time for steering only. |

Agree. The transmission is programmed to run at the lowest RPM possible so it saves gas.........which is the primary objective that BMW is trying to achieve. I hate this also, but BMW decides to tweak this via new programming, have to drive more in sport mode.

Strange to think that BMW is being so conscientious - worrying about saving gas for customers who apparently can afford not only to drop $50k and way beyond for the car as well as premium gasoline.

Let's remember it is driven by European legislation on emissions across the manufacturer's total output. So in a sense, it is survival, and the threat of penalties for companies like BMW and Mercedes, who are in for a real kicking if they don't meet the targets. Fingers are wagging at BMW and the like, as their average emission figures are high, compared to manufacturers who make a high percentage of smaller engine outputs. HighlandPete |

The reality is they could care less about whether or not we can pay for high gas prices. They would also probably be that much happier not having to use Turbo's, Eight Speed Transmissions, Aluminum parts, stop start technology...you name it. The fact of the matter is that they have to offer high horsepower, light weight and higher efficient vehicles due to the dynamics of a competitve market, and all the numerous government regulations around the world. Just read where ZF is working on a 9 Speed tranny for the front wheel drive market. Those cars will probably make 3 shifts before going through an intersection!

Points well taken. I suppose my bottom line gripe is this: the F10 is certainly a beautiful car - BMW outdid itself on the "bling" on this newest generation of the 5. However, in my opinion they took a step or two back in performance. As we all know, the steering is hideous, the low speed hunt for a gear is both surprising and annoying, etc. etc.

makes me worry
wonder if mine will be afflicted? Better not, I am hyper sensitive to dead center steering wheel position and straight line tracking
does active steering option have an impact, not clear how many affected cars have this option.

Frustrated with my 550i
So the local dealership has my car for over a week. They said the car was "too new" and couldn't get the right software patch for the pulling issue. They kept telling me the download keeps failing....probably similar to loading latest version of windows back on a computer.
They finally called me to tell me that they found the right software patch for the pulling to the right.....car is ready. I go down and pick up my 550, take care of the paperwork and leave the parking lot and drive about 10 miles....car still pulls to the right. I turn around and drive the car back to the dealer. I asked if a foreman could get in the car and drive with me, but now one was working on a Saturday. The customer service at the dealer was excellent...they got me back into a loaner (another 328) and I was on my way. However, I just want my car back. You would think that a good tech would test the car before wasting my saturday morning at the dealership. They did some recall work...apparently there is a recall on the wheel sensors for the TPMS, so those were replaced. My car is actually unsafe...it pulls over two lanes in a 4 second count. I would not want to wish this on anyone. |

Just picked up car from Dealer for steering issues for the second time. It still pulls to the right. They apparently took out the struts, calibrated them, put them back in and realigned the car. Shop foreman was involved.
Steering wheel is now slightly off center now. Going to drive this weekend and determine next steps. Just a little frustrated...... |

Have dealer tech make sure front sway bar is centered out. Mine was off centered to the right and car pulled to the right. Drove me crazy for months till I got under there and started checking shit out for myself. Fixed and btw I can die at wheel and car will go straight. LOL
