Callipers Repainted & Added M Decal

Yesterday had a few hours spare so decided to repaint my callipers. Previously done them around 2 years ago but now they needed a fresh coat.

As last time I used VHT Bright Blue (comes out dark though) and VHT Clear Gloss as a top coat. This time round I added an M Decal on the fronts too. Wasn't sure about doing this but I think it looks good.

I did 2 coats of the blue 20/30 mins apart and 2 coats of clear gloss. I used a portable site light as heat to cure the paint after each coat. Gave me a chance to also clean the wheels from the back while I had them off the car.

Took around 4/5 hours in total. The prep work was the biggest task masking and covering the bits off that didn't want painting or over spray.

Few pics below.

Thanks for the link

Done mine 18months ago, using Halfords own brand calliper paint which I chose to match the BMW logo wheel centres(hand painted) looks okay, but definitely need redone and after seeing your photos, going to do same colour as you have, looks better and very much like factory fitted colours on new models.

No worries

That colour looks good too. I like how it matches the badge colour . I guess with hand painting you have more control of where the paint goes. With spray paint I found you have to spend alot of time masking bits off but worth it in the end.

I've put the links to the spray paint below...

Junebug 85.....

Have now ordered via links you put up, one of each.....but now thinking if one aerosol of blue enough for two coats of the four calipers or would more be required ??
Also, did you put the decals on after both the clear coats .....or after the first coat was dry then the second coat over the decals to seal them in.....??

Hi, I found one can is plenty. I still have a bit left in the can and that was after 2 good coats on all 4 callipers. The fronts take more paint as there's more area to spray but you should be good with one can.

I put one clear coat on, then waited for it to dry completely, apply the decal and then another clear coat to seal it.

Post some pics up once you've done it. Will be good to see .

Won't the sliding parts, pins and pad slides get gunked up with paint?

The pukka painted M-Sport callipers are proper 4-pot opposed pistons - these are single piston sliding callipers. I would have thought spraying several coats of paint and lacquer will prevent them sliding correctly.

This is the second time I've done this since end of 2012 and not has any issues so far...

Brake pads and discs have been changed on front and back after being sprayed first time and the dealer didn't have any issues with the changeover.

A couple of really good results there lads, well done.

I done the brakes on my Z3M a couple of months ago, however in Silver. The car was off the road and needing pads anyway so pull the brakes apart completely and cleaned/painted them up. I will attach the results just for the craic.

If I was to do the 5 series ones, I think I'd remove the pads and paint the rattle clips separately.

And a wee chance to photowhore... lol

Thanks man.

Yeh I guess the proper way to do it is remove the pads and clip.

Loving the CSL!

Looking back, since I had them off the car and given the state they were in, I should have really had them sandblasted first. Had a couple of parts on that car blasted and primed, boy made a cracking job on them too, he was local and handy paid.
