Cigarette lighter socket removal in back console

I have a cigarette lighter socket between the two seats at the bottom of the back console below the air vents.

Is there anyway to pull out this socket to have access to its wiring without having to remove the whole console?

Thanks.

Found a tool called 'release tool' part number 83300496588... Costs £60 about $90... Extortionate for such an item.

Anyone used this tool? Does the whole thing come out exposing the wires? If so is it easy to remove the socket and once removed do you have enough clearance to solder some wires in the back of the socket?

At this price I'd really want to know if it is possible to do what I want before parting with my hard earned money

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Sorry couldn’t resist asking why you removing this? I find it very handy as a plug for the back seats.

I want to tap into it.. I will be putting it back in once my cable is soldered.

The way this socket is switched is ideal for my application (apple TV + dvd screens).. No cables trailing, will all be wired under the seats.

Very easy 5 seconds job. This is the one of the first step in removing the console. Just grab and pull the whole from from top. Total of 6 clips, strong one. I don't think you can break it.

Instructions from BMW;
-> Open storage compartment lid (1).
-> Starting at the top, unclip the cover of the centre console (2) toward the rear.

Do not use any tools in this step, it would damage the edge of the trim.
Only your fingers with firm pull.

Yes. you will have access to the wires at back of the lighter socket. It is male female connector. You can not solder at this position. You need to tap from the wire before the female socket. Air vent would not block, it is on the top. lighter socket at the bottom.

Very easy, just pull from the top part.
