Power Rear Sunshades with Manual Rear Side Window Shades?
I am having second thoughts on the sunshade option. I will rarely have passengers in the rear, but am thinking about getting this option for security reasons.
I would like to keep personal items concealed from prying eyes. are the shades useful for that purpose? Also, they might be useful for naps in rest areas on long trips. |

I'll never buy a car without them. Even though I've got tinted windows, they cut down the light flooding your car from SUV's with big sexy lights behind you very effectively.

My car came with this option since I bought it off the lot and I never use either the side or rear shades. I have 20% tint on the rear side and back windows so I don't really find I need for additional light blocking but using the rear shade to block extra bright or poorly aimed lights isn't a bad idea.

No need for tinting if one has all the shades. Would never buy a car without. They're perfectly quiet and offer the option of going down. Provides shade, privacy and a nice look.

The camera option requires Park Distance Controls, and that adds another $750 to the $400 camera. So, you might as well go for the Driver Assistance pkg at that point. So, it is a lot more money than the sunshades.

@op - I have them. I think the reasons you cite are good. I find them set and forget. They are there protecting from sun and prying eyes except for the occasional rear passenger or all windows open scenario. They do a great job for privacy without tint.

I've got OEM dark glass, probably as dark as 35-40% tint, and the shades. I really like this combo.

See my other post - skip 'em. Consider skipping the DHP also - but if you do any parallel parking at all, get the PDC and cameras. They'll always make you look like a pro and you'll be sure not to run over little animals, or children and their pets while reversing.

Good question. I drive about 50% freeway - mostly cement in our area, and mostly quite rough. Here in Germany they are silky smooth, so it might not be a fair comparison. About 40% city and about 10% - a very enjoyable 10% - mountain roads.
I had DHP on the old X5 and it really shines on the curvy mountain roads. It's just awesome there. But in my case, that's really only 10% of the time. Certainly no difference in the city, and on the freeway, the difference I remember is on specific on-ramps that have a negative camber.
