Trading in the 550i for M5 or M3 need opinons!!!
Hello Guys,
I have loved my 550i, but going from an E60 M5 to the 550i just not the same and so much I miss from the M Performance lines. So I'm looking at getting a 2014+ M5 or a 2015+ M3 Ideally I would like white with the orange interior. So I took them for a drive and both are amazing cars. Both with a tune can add 100+ HP to the stock configuration. Cons for M5 - Bigger and Heavier, Has little float in suspension at high speeds, but can be changed of course. Cons for M3 - No soft close door option, no cooled seats (I live in AZ so gets super HOT) No V8 tt sound, so exhaust isn't favorite still nice. Not much leg room for passengers. I wanted your guys opinion. |

I would stay away from BMW V8 TT but that's my opinion. Just take a look at the F10 M5 Post and see the amount of Rod bearings that effected the S63 at low mileage. Coming from the E60 M5 you must know about BMW's obvious inability to get clearances right in the low end. I personally wouldn't gamble with it. Unless you can get an exclusionary warranty.
The M3 would be a slightly better option, but they have their share of engine issues. |

I'd go for the F10 M5. I really want a CPO one myself, but I think I'm going to look at X5 ///Ms instead. White on orange/red is the best color combination out there!

M5 for sure... M3 would be a lateral move from a 550i's overall package in terms of drawbacks in quality and luxury and gains in performance/handling. M5 FTW!

Why is the M4 not in your list? Or a Cadamallac CTS-V sedan 550hp with an easy to work on LS motor. I thinking of trading my 550 in for a ctsv when the warranty runs out, I know the interior isnt all that great but I want the 4 doors a trunk and more power with better tuning options. I'll easily be able to get it up in the 700hp range, wait a minute, im getting crazy over here, this is your thread, M4?

If you can get both get the new M550 which is faster then the F10 M5 and pick up a CPO F80 M3.
Or on a smaller budget Get a 2013 or higher F10 550 and MP flash it for a whopping 650whp and get the E90 M3 and ESS super charge it worth 500whp.

Get a CPO 2014+ F10 M5 or M6GC and be done with it. The 3s are too small.

Obviously there's going to be a bias here but I could sit here and post many threads all throughout bimmerpost and 5post of all the N63 variants and S63's that had engine failures that I recently read through due to the issues with my N63. The V8 TT is probably going to go down as the worst engine BMW produced thus far. It's still too early to tell with the M5, since people are just now hitting 50k, but there's one thread that had 3 different owners needing new engines for rod bearings over in the M5 forums. We'll see more as more higher mileage S63's come into play. I love cars, and BMW has made some really great cars in the past. But head over to a Audi or MB forum and try to gather as many threads of rod bearing failure under 100k as you can, you won't collect nearly as much as you could the N63/S63. OP wanted opinions on the proposed 2 cars so that's a little off topic but putting into perspective of what's 'normal' wear. My choice would be the M3 but even that has the notorious crank hub as a potential weak point. No car is going to be problem free, but its always good to plan for worst case scenario. But both those options have higher risks of needing a new engine (crank hub or rod bearings, pick your poison). The BMW 5 series is already #2 on the list of cars that most owners get rid of within the first year of ownership and BMW has 3 cars in the top 5 of it. #1 being the 3 series and #4 being the 4 series. I would get the F10 M5 if you are getting the 2014+ The issues with pre-LCI have been resolved and the interior refresh details are really nice. I am in the same boat going back and forth between an M5 and an M3 but so many young kids drive the M3s and M4s that it makes it less appealing to me. I love the handling and fun that the M3 can deliver but the presence of the M5 to me is more stealth and much more respected by others. That's just my .02 cents though. I would only get an F80 M3 if it was a 2018 model because of again issues that have been resolved and just better cosmetic updates.

My humble opinion... and I think it varies by lifestage.
M5 for daily driver with "fun" for people with kids and having to be "mature". M3/4 for those same "mature" people but as a second car. M3/4 for young unattached people... don't need to be "mature" yet. In my specific lifestage, I'd spring for the M5. My 550 was a compromise of fiscal restraint because we bought some big ticket items last few years and we had a baby. So the 997 that was on the docket got pushed.

I think I will be doing the M5. It's has more luxury amenities that the M3 doesn't. I like the styling cues of the M3 and I would prefer a sedan over a coupe. I have no kids or not married yet so not worried about that now or in the next couple years. The M3 sound just doesn't sound good to me at all. The M5 is a luxury rocket ?
