Up to 1Qt of oil every 750 miles?
Hit a pothole and visited the dealership to get a replacement tire; thank The Lord for Wheel & Tire Protection, and mentioned I was having a slight oil consumption issue on my 2012 550xi MSport. The service advisor pulled out some documentation from BMW stating the 550's have acceptable oil consumption up to 1Qt every 750 miles!!??? 😱 I checked my glasses, read it again, then laughed with my service advisor!
Does anyone else find this acceptable oil loss a little strange??

It's not acceptable no matter what BMW says. BMW knows it's a defect and is trying to cover things up. Now, they want you to put in 2 quarts when the computer calls for 1 quart. My dealer did this and now my mpg is less probably due to the additional drag on the engine.
I'm dealing with BMW corporate on this. Trust me, all you need to do is raise this issue with corporate to get resolution. Also, I suggest anyone having this problem file a complaint with the gov't at www.safercar.gov. I really like my 550 but none of us should accept BMW's position that one quart every 750 miles is somehow "normal". We all need to act on this and not let BMW get away with this defect. |
