Well your not burning oil like me but since you are in a much colder climate maybe you might be interested in the Mobil 1 0W-40 that I used on my last oil change. You probably won't change oil again before the winters over but the 0w will protect more on start up and I think the thicker viscosity at high temp is the reason I'm only down a 1/4 of a quart through 3,000 miles when I was burning a quart every 2k before. It's also on BMW's approved LL-01(long life) oils so no warranty issues should something happen. I'm sure what you used is more than good enough just thought I'd bring up positive results I've had with the switch.

It's nothing you can see on the tach, but the rough idle is strong enough to shake you in your seat when it happens, worse than my 10yr old Jeep Wrangler does. Anyone else have this? |

Mine does this at idle when at operating temperature, but my Dinan rep told me it was because of the Dinan Stage 2 tune --- mine doesn't shake you in your seat though.

Hmm - I'd be really surprised if it's the tune, i wouldn't think they'd change anything from the stock mapping at idle. It's strong enough that I can feel it shaking in my legs and butt. I don't think you should feel the engine idle at all in a 1 year old $75k luxury sedan.

Large oil consumption surprising for a new vehicle
I have a 2012 BMW 550i. I bought it in Texas on 6/30/12. it is a wonderful driving car. Yes, the ultimate driving machine I agree. It had 1800 mi when I purchased the vehicle. One month later and roughly 1400 mi of driving, the oil needed to be what BMW calls topped off due to the electronic sensor detection indicating low oil level. It is now Sept. 16, 2012, and I am nearly at the minimum level again with the vehicle at 4600 miles. Btw, the technician told me it is normal for this car to burn a quart of oil between 700 and 1k mi because its a high performance engine. Honestly, I believe that is crazy. I guess If I were to travel across the country, I will need to carry a a six pack of oil in the trunk of a new car... Btw, I have to use Castrol synthetic 5w30 weight oil at a little over $9/ quart. I believe there is a design flaw and am concerned... I just purchased 2 quarts of oil and have them handy as I motor around DFW...

I have the same situation with my 550i. I add 1 quart approx. every 3000 miles. I have gotten use to keeping a spare quart in the vehicle. I am definitely going to ask about this at my first oil change at the end of this month.

I got 40000km on my car.. I was burning about 1 qt every 3000km.
As of now my SA told me to come in 5 times at 1000km intervals to measure the oil consumption and top off. After the 5th time they will add up the consumption and file some sort of report with BMW and see what they recommend we do, if anything. I will keep everyone posted. I'm going in for my 3rd checkup this week. I think if you have a good relationship with a SA, he/she will give the value added service.

Looks like BMW needs to go back to the drawing board. I'm waiting to hear if the '13 LCI 750 with the 445hp N63 has the same issue. I'm positive the re-tuned engine will hit the F10 LCI next summer, which I'm eagerly waiting for..
If I own a 550, I would use 2 oil catch cans (one for each intake). I believe it's not just burning oil, but sucking through the intake vacuum hose. No matter what the technicians tell you, burning at least 2qt between an oil change is not normal for a brand new car. It's a business decision. All of my BMWs have burned more oil than I thought they should. I got in the habit of carrying a couple quarts in the trunk. They are notorious for burning oil.

No, probably not. But it's become part of my weekly maintenance ritual the past few years to check it, I don't even bother to sweat it. To me it's less annoying than the later models loosing that distinctive BMW interior smell, but that's another thread.

Adding the second quart today at just under 7,000 miles. SA says 1 quart every 1,000 miles is manufacturer specification. I said that I thought that was ridiculous and he just shrugged and said that was what they were told.
It will be interesting to see how much oil is burned after 10-20,000 miles. Anyone with a 2011 550 have any experiences to report?

You're right it's a business decision because it's such an inconvenience to go to the dealer and sit for 30-60 minutes while they have to have to pull a tech away from what he's doing to put one quart of oil into the car, most people would just do it themselves then hassle it. That's what they're betting on and winning.
