How to check windshield if has HUD or not ?
Hello,
My car doesnt have HUD by factory, but I belive the previous owner have changed the windshield. I would like to retrofit a HUD on my car as I already have the 6WA cluster and I want to know if I need a new windshield aswell. Some people say if it doubles the image then it must be HUD windshield and if not is not for HUD. My windshield shows double and if you look closely it is even triple but the middle layer reflects it less than others. I took these pictures, the ones with reflection are taken from the inside, maybe it helps finding out. Last edited by Dragoss91; 11-20-2020 at 09:19 AM.. |

I know, my car came with normal cluster and I have retrofitted the 6WA, now I want to retrofit the HUD but I don't know if my actual windshield is for HUD or not.

Most likely you will have to replace the windshield for a proper retrofit. Alternatively, you can have clear ceramic film applied on your windshield. Clear ceramic is equivalent to about 80% tint. There's no tint in it but the ceramic makes it a little darker and will be almost unnoticeable.

Not only remove, you would need to replace the dashboard or custom cut the hole.
Then there is the involved modules and coding. I’m also not sure about your cluster, what cluster did your car come with? My 2013 with HUD came with 6WA. This is as you are finding out a very involved retrofit. |

After I finish my CA and Soft close retrofits I will be doing a HUD retrofit on my F10 without the windshield. Apparently HUD on a regular windshield is not that bad. I am planning on spending less than $300 on HUD.

Another option to consider is HUD windshield film before opting for a new windscreen.
At $10, this can't be too expensive of an option to try before a $1000 windscreen. The factory windscreen typically have less optical aberrations in it than those offered by aftermarket. Then there is the installation after affects, such as finding glass particulates in the car afterwards (if installer is using braided steel windshield wire), potential rain sensor issues, potential black sealant issues, potential exterior plastic trim issues, potential windshield wiper issues, and etc.....all based on age of the vehicle and installer used. My last $500 windscreen, Pilkington stamped, but not BMW stamped, has flat spots in the upper left and right corners of the glass that is exceptionally visible from the outside, and it has two noticeable vertical optical lines, noticeable when looking 45 degrees to the right from the driver's position. Of course, if my insurance is paying, I'm going with BMW stamped glass.... |

I had similar double vision when I bought my car. Nothing retrofitted. I managed to get it replaced for a genuine one through insurance which fixed it. I had to request for a genuine one specifically and said it effects my vision and is unsafe which it kinda is.
Hope you get yours sorted. My OCD was going a bit mental haha |
