Big bill after 27 months of worry free driving

So quick background, I bought a used 2012 535i in 2015 with 32k and she now has 76k. Literally no issues until last week. I was driving and got the dreaded engine temp high and yellow limp. I promptly stopped, topped off coolant and no issues. Fast forward to Sunday, I start hearing squeak noises from the engine bay. Turns out my oil filter housing was leaking into my belt...I should have noticed lol. Anyway, take her in to my Indy, waterpump/thermostat, both oil filter housing gaskets and pulley, tensioner and belt replacement. Bill is 880 + 400 + 380 respectively. She's been good to me and although it's a 1700$ bill I don't mind it. With that said...keep an aye on your oil filter housing and do the diy while you can.
I figure I'll tackle the cooling system and spark plugs/coils in the next 10k.

just had both oil filter housing gaskets replaced because BMW said it's leaking onto the belt. cost me just under $500 for an Indy shop to do. BMW wanted $900

Pretty typical maintenance for 76k, OFHG has likely been leaking to some degree since 55-60k.

Why didn't you come see me?

I'm running 0w. And by me, I mean the BMW dealer where is got serviced.

This is why it pays to have an extended warranty.

I agree. I have a 2012 535i currently at 99,010 miles. I just did the water pump/thermostat 1,000 miles ago (went out stranding me on the way to Disney with company), the tensioner belts and pulleys 8,000 miles ago (because they were making noise and my Indy said do it before, not after), front blower motor 10,000 miles ago, as well as the oil gaskets at the same time. Before that, just basically tires and oil changes.

Everything I have read says these items (except for fan) are pretty standard for the 2012 535i

Is there a DIY for the oil filter housing? I have a pool of oil on the top of the housing.

I ended up paying an indy shop $490 for the repair. Didn't want to risk dropping a screw in that mess.

I guess the gasket has been a problem for multiple generations, and still not fixed by BMW. Same with the VC gaskets, which my car needs. Unacceptable. I think BMW will start to feel the pain of losing customers....I don't see how they can survive longterm with this kind of track record.

Haven't had mine replaced yet. You think my Indy shop would have noticed when they changed my oil filter gasket housing?

Oil filter housing gasket seems to be a popular failure on many vehicles. Had it done before Christmas on the Nissan truck I drive.

72k miles and I have not had valve cover, or OFHG replaced and it wasn't leaking when I had the oil changed 3k miles ago. This is another reason I like to do 5k oil changes instead of 17k (or whatever BMW recommends on 2011 535i).

Please elaborate. How does more frequent change affect or preserve the gaskets? Is it the quality breakdown of oil over a longer time that leads to the leaks in some way?

Thanks!

It is not the frequent oil changes that saves the gaskets, but rather frequent trips (instead of once in 17k miles) where problems could be caught early rather than finding out that a leaky ofhg caused the belt to slip and caused $4k worth of damage.

Every 5k miles I am at my Indy, and while the car is on the lift I ask my mechanic to look for anything that might be of a concern.

No problem. If you are mechanically inclined you could check for potential problems yourself, but I am not; so I rely on my mechanic...I guess things can still happen in between oil changes but I rather take a gamble on 5k than 17k miles.
