Tire and Wheel Insurance Question
Any thoughts on Tire and Wheel Insurance? My dealer is quoting $1449 for 5yrs. It's $1049 for one year. See attached brochure for the deal. If tires cost ~$250 and wheels cost ~$400, I'd have to blow through 6 tires or a three wheels (+tires) to benefit. I don't have any failure data for RFTs and wheels. There are lots of potholes on the roads in NJ and NY. Any recommendations or considerations one way or the other? Thanks.

no deductible? nice. but...
but what is "damaged"? if the alloy is slightly bended, then is it damaged? with properly inflated tires, you gotta hit pretty hard for that to happen and if that's the case then suspension is also likely to be ***ked. if you parallel park and scratched the side of your wheel(s), i bet my ass it won't be covered. |

I had two sidewall bubbles in the 21 months I had the 335i. At least one was caused by slightly grazing the curb while parallel parking. The fix? A new tire, for something like $250. I understand that they've made progress with the RFTs in both durability and ride, but given the choice, I'd skip them. As far as the insurance, it seems pretty bizzare that year 1 is over $1k, and the additional four years are only about $100/year. But $1,049 seems a little steep to me, especially in light of your payback analysis. I bought it for the M3 but haven't used it yet...dunno if I will, and dunno if I'll buy it again. I'd also check on the cosmetic damage -- I agree with Sealobo, I would be amazed if it's covered.

2011 550i: I just had a nail in my RFT resulting in a slow leak. The tire showed on the repair ticket at $715!!! Thankfully, I had bought the T&W Insurance. It will not cover scrapes or cosmetic damage unless it affects the performance of the wheel (not!).
However, I'm now glad I did it. |
