Auto open close trunk not working anymore

Hi guys, I tried closing my cousins trunk manually not knowing that you need to press the button. I didn't put to much pressure because as I attempted my cousin caught me and I stoppped. He was able to close it after that. Next day he tried to open his trunk and it stopped working. Anyone know what could be wrong? I feel bad and trying to fix it for him. If you have any advice please help a brother out. Thanks guys!

Your manual closure of the trunk should have in no way damaged the automatic mechanism. I close the trunk manually often when I have a very full trunk (like when I go camping, for example) to ensure nothing inside gets damaged. I have also had friends who did not know about the power closing feature do me a favour and close the trunk manually, with no side effects.

Try opening the trunk all the way open to its max position and then press the auto close button to close. Do it 2-3 times. This usually fixes it.

Make sure the trunk lockout switch inside the console is disabled (so trunk opening is enabled).

I would start here!

Odd you should mention this. Two days ago, when I do the hands-free opening of the trunk, it only opens up 1/4 of the way and stops intermittently. I have to either open it manually or hit the button in the trunk for it to open all the way.

Open it up fully and then press the button to close it. May have to do it a couple of times but it should fix it.

This is what I did yesterday, hoping it solves it today.

Trunk is back to only opening 1/4 of the way. I am going to test something out, as part of me thinks it may be related to how close the parking assist sees you are to an object. For a fact, the trunk can open freely without hitting anything, but maybe there is logic that takes into account ANY objects caught by the sensors to protect the car from damage. I'll keep you guys posted.

I've stopped with the rear PDC in the red and the trunk still opens fully.

Is your car a MY16? There's a bulletin for this issue for approx first half of production year for MY16. The fix is to upgrade the Istep level to newer software that has revised values for tripping the protection mechanism.

Wow, yea, it is a 16, but built 7/15.

As an update, dealer did a software update, trunk works like a charm, but oddly, when you adjust a setting to your seats, steering wheel, mirrors or anything and go to set the memory, you now get a 1.5 second delay until the chime sounds to notify you it has been set.

That is by design. Glad you got your trunk issue fixed.

I've been having the same intermittent problem with my 2016. Going to have the dealer pull the records and see whether this is part of the SB.
