What happens if.....?

What happens if you were driving your 530d (auto) at 100 km/h and you placed your hand on the auto shifter and by accident pressed the P button?

Would the wheels lock up?

That button gives me the willies..........

I just tried it (admittedly only at 60 km/h which was just as well). Unfortunately, the wheels locked up and I've scraped the sides of two of my neighbour's cars. I've offered to pay for the repairs so they are pretty cool about it.

I always have to learn the hard way. Had my car for just over one day. Pants.

Are you serious? If there is any damage drop me a pm. I know a repairs shop in Heysham who does a great job on a budget!

It does nothing - it tells you on the iDrive you need to be stationary.

It will go into N at speed though if you move the lever in error.

I am have on occasions pressed park while driving in town. Wheels did not lock but warning gong sounds and I drive tells you off. As posted earlier you can slip into N.
One useful function that has caught me out is the speed limit button. Pull away in traffic while tapping steering wheel to music can turn the limiter on. Traffic clears you put your foot down as normal and no power! You then start thinking engines gone wrong when you notice the three little green letters on the dash LIM. By the way if you do not notice the letters and stamp hard on the accelerator you override the limiter and go into warp drive.

Not sure but I definitely read somewhere in yahoo that requires automakers to make the park button or lever idiot-Proff in preventing people pressing it accidentally traveling in high speeds.

Find it hard to see how wheels can lock up. Carried out some tests on a wide empty road. Press P at a crawl warning gong goes off an message in IDrive, no lock up. Tried at 20mph not even a warning. Worked my way up in 10 mph increments to 70mph (110kph) still not a thing. I expect that there is a safety interlock that cuts the message from the park button. It may be an European thing or people who lock up have a fault. My car is a UK spec. Sports auto November 2010 build.

Amsbrea,

I would get your car into the dealers. They can put the car on a rolling road to carry out the checks. If it was the P button that locked the wheels and caused your accident it may happen again at higher speed and the outcome may be far worse. In a world of liability I cannot see BMW omitting this safety device. Get your car checked, next time it may result in more than paintwork damage. In the meantime do not press P unless you are at a standstill.
As an aside if you open drivers door more than a few inches while reversing the P system does lock the wheels. I suspect you did not open your door at 60 kph! Get it checked out for your safety.
