2012 528 Nav issue...missing roads...anyone else? issue and solution
I was out about a month after getting my car and typed in a few addresses of houses Im looking at...the car failed to recognize the addresess. I figured not a big deal because the developments are fairly new. Then, on the way home, I realized streets that have been around for 10 years weren't even in the nav system. I found this odd given that my 08 M3's nav had these streets.
I called the dealer and took it in but they said I had the most updated version. I disputed that and told them to check it with some of the other 2012's on their lot. After a day of going back and forth, they applied some update they were given for the last generation system...it worked. They said this was the first time they have seen this (even though they admitted there is a TSB on it) and they thanked me for bringing it to their attention so they can alert the other 2012 owners. Has anyone noticed this issue? If so and your dealer doesn't know what to do, tell them to apply the last set of updates to your new system and it should work like a charm.

I have the same issue on my 2011 F10 550i. Streets that have been upgraded for two years show up as country roads instead of Highways. I went to upgrade the maps for $199 as BMW adverts but was told the price was $450. HOLY CRAP!! They said this is because it is a Hard Drive based Nav and not a disc. Come on BMW - are you kidding me. Its a download from somewhere in the shops system to the car. Anything more than that and BMW would not have implemented it. Nobody goes backwards in terms of costs.
My guess is that this is a price gouge and i was really upset at being treated as if I was too stupid to understand how complicated it was. BMW margins must be immense or, if they hold to the story that it is complex then I have to assume BMW got stupid. Stupid is as stupid does and I don't think Forest would be confused about this one. |

I'm still waiting for the lastest update for my June 2011 520D Sports. When I contacted the dealer I was told an update would be available Sept 2011. In Sept I was told it was delayed until October. In October I was told it would definitely be ready Nov. Guess what.. It's now Feb and I'm still waiting and the dealer say's BMW can't or won't give him a revised date. For a car that cost €60,000 this is totally unacceptable,
Does any one in UK or Ireland have the latest revision number of the "Road Map Europe Premium 2011" in their car. The version I have is : 101094.0.19 Thanks. |

The map on my 2012 535xi sucks. It frequently puts me on the wrong side of the road, takes me the wrong way, or has the wrong address associated with a business. My Garmin is 10x better.
The screen is nice though, and when it works it does work well. But, overall, a disappointment. |

You guys might want to check again...my dealer finally admitted to a TSB and they had to order "an update stick" that they uploaded to my system and it has seemingly worked.

The price is so high because dealer must change the "labor fees" for installing the map for you. According to BMW you are not supposed to do map install by yourself (though you most definitely can do that). Pretty idiotic strategy, considering the fact that, for example, on all current Mercedes models with navigation you can simply order map update disk directly from NAVTEQ (who provides map database for Mercedes) and install it yourself without affecting your car's warranty in any negative way.
Also, yes, TeleAtlas (the company supplying BMW with map database) sux badly for USA coverage - I have latest (2012) map data in all our current BMW cars with CIC harddrive-based navigation and it still, for example, might tell you (using voice guidance) to "turn right" on some random intersection even though the directions on the iDrive's display will actually show that you must continue driving straight Same goes for absolutely random and very often lagging voice instructions to "keep left" or "keep right". All in all, the $150 portable Garmin unit with free lifetime map updates (at least 4 of such updates released every year by Garmin and you can do updates by yourself, without paying Garmin the "labor fees") is 100x better than the current harddrive-based iDrive navigation system. BMW doesn't know how to implement electronic devices/components in a user-friendly and inexpensive way. Last edited by AlexK; 02-15-2012 at 09:49 PM.. |

I ordered the DVDs (2012 North America - PN#019900372287) from my dealer for $11.00 and expect them tomorrow (I know it is cheaper from the dealers in the states but this is Canada - land of excuses to charge much higher prices).
I then ordered a FSC code from sergej (*******[AT]inbox.lt) for under $100.00. He sent me the FSC code for my car almost immediately. (Initial email sent to him at 12:58 asking for the price and I received the FSC at 1:35. 37 minutes, not bad, especially when you consider I had other work to do and was not very fast at the responses myself. Great job sergej!) I expect to have it all installed in stages over the next few days as it is my understanding from reading other posts it takes about 2 1/4 hours to install. It just restarts and commences from where it left off every time you run the car. I'll let you guys know how it goes but $111.00 is hella of lot cheaper than doing it through the dealer.

This is a dead business. All the car needs is AirPlay or equivalent to mirror iPhone display. Built-in nav is a buggy whip. On-board data is crazy except maybe as a back-up. It's like having a phone book. Except when they want to charge you $450 for the update.

I've installed it and all went well. It simply ran in the background and continued where it left off when I started the car again.
Going from 2010 to 2012 maps does show improvement on the data but I can't comment yet on behavior (I doubt anything will be noticed there). From a data perspective I really noticed a difference this morning coming into the centre of the city. In the 2010 version there were only a few high-profile buildings depected in 3D. Now the whole bloody downtown is present in wonderful 3D. Prior to this it showed me turning into an empty lot when I entered the underground parking of the complex I work in. Now it actually shows the building (and all others around it) and the parking enterance as you turn ito it. I'm going home tonight (I actualy live far from the city and have a townhouse I sleep in when I'm working) and am very interested in seeing if the new maps have the 10 mile multi-lane extension to the highway that opened fully last year (was not in the previous version). Still not sure if it was worth the $111 upgrade cost.

So you are saying they still use DVDs? My dealer said its all done by USB stick now...and that you can no longer order updated DVDs. I didnt end up paying anything...they just updated it as part of warranty.

So what will your dealer do for you next year? I can tell you right now they'll offer to update your map data for somewhere between $300 and $600.

Ok....but from the sounds of things, I am just glad the updated it this time and didn't charge me. However, given the car was only 2 months old, I have to say I expected them to make it right and not charge me. I know at some point if I want new updates, they will likely charge me.
