I've got an '11 550 and I mine doesn't light up. I turned the car on and turned the headlight switch on all positions and no ambient lighting. I've got M-Sport sills and they don't light up either.

Ambient Lighting is standard on all UK 5 Series variants apart from the entry level 520D where it's a cost option. Cars with ambient lighting add a 'chrome' insert into the four door handles, too.

Here in Indonesia you can adjust the brightness of the light. The scroller is located next to the headlights button.
It looks great during night time driving.. There are also light from the roof for the front and rear passenger
And its a standard feature here

I found out the ambient lighting is tied in with the instrument panel lighting control. Since I don't like the gauges on full brightness I turned the level down - this in turn dimmed my ambient lighting on the door panels to almost off and everywhere else the ambient lights are. I like the look of the lights in the door panels, but I wish they could be controlled independently of the dash light controller.

BMW should do a better job promoting this and some of the other kit like multi function display, it's awesome - glad I'm getting both on my new f11 530d msport ! 😄😄
