BMW F10 2011 550i with Dual Batteries!

on the process of installing BMS S2, I needed to disconnect the battery but I've found something different in my car, two batteries!

the question now is, why there is extra battery? and how to disconnect the two?

Its for the active rear steer. Just disconnect the negative lead as usual for any car.

My car ('12 550i) has the same, it definitely for the active steer. As it was stated earlier, pulling the negative cable off the main battery will cut all power.

do you have an auxiliary heater? a Webasto or something?
I know cars with that usually have an extra smaller battery installed.

Bavarian Tech and aclockwrk
thank you for the info. as I said earlier, my brother has 535 with active steering (all wheel steering) with one battery only! for sure there is other things that require additional power. The 535 has same spec to the 550 except for ARS, NV, ACC. Maybe one of them is the reason of the additional battery

one more thing, if I disconnect the battery, do I need to visit the dealer for adaptation or code clearing?

Noggie

I also have dynamic handling so that probably needs extra power I guess.

In terms of installing the BMS S2. I have installed and uninstalled numerous times, just disconnect the main negative terminal on the big battery. When you reconnect it all you have to do is reset the time and date, everything else is still in memory.

Interestingly enough, my '14 550xi was in for service this week (~13k miles on the clock), and they replaced the battery. I was shocked (no pun intended). The SA said it was related to a BMW recall (or similar) action - batteries prematurely discharging? I've never had an issue with it, but I found it interesting that they were swapping these out. The car has only been on the road for 2 years and 13k miles. I've usually replaced batteries at around 5 years.

Sorry to resurrect an older thread.

However I'm now having active 4-wheel steering issues on my 535d F10 that I optioned up

The original batteries are 5 years old, so I understand that they are a likely cause.

I can get prices on the main battery from many after-market suppliers here in Australia ( sydney region)

However the smaller auxialiary battery is a mystery. The dealer hasn't told me what its specs are - anybody here able to fill me in?

Also is there any likely other culprits in the diagnostic chain that could cause this system to fail?
