Good point

Was it just the warning or did you have a misfire at the same time?

And if so, what were the circumstances - just started, running for how long, etc?

Hi Relic,

We had driven about 10 miles in moderate urban traffic, about 30 mph, when it hesitated and flashed the warning. Car is back at the dealer, who is trying to contend that your last "drive train warning" and the one I got are unrelated. Did you have a service diagnosis on your last episode, and if so what did they tell you?

Update: After ten days in the care of the service department, the report is faults stored in DME for fuel pump current too high";..."removed and inspected both fuel level senders. Found suspicious connection at sending unit. Reinstalled fuel level sender and reconnected."

Been driving BMWs for 30 years and this is my first real disappointment with one of their cars.

Sorry to have to report that the identical error message appeared again this evening for the fourth time in two months. I dont think anyone has a clue what the real problem is, and that is what is terrifying to me about this.

my update is that just today the dealer found a 'checksum' fault code in the DME and is awaiting BMW NA approval to replace the DME

while my messages have been ‘engine malfunction reduced power’ and (after the software upgrade) ‘drivetrain - maximum drivetrain output not possible’
your ‘fuel system malfunction – maximum engine output not possible’ is not all that different

Whats the production date on your vehicles?

You guys should escalate these issues to BMW NA if you havent done so already.

Mine was June 2010, delivered July 2, 2010.
I have spoken to BMW, and await their response. I was told they would speak to the Service Manager and get back to me in five to seven days, so they are still in that window. Meanwhile, the GT waits in the service department.

Relic, I hope your drive is without further incident. My GT is now scheduled to have the EKP module replaced, as it had displayed fuel system malfunction warnings twice while in the care of the dealer's service department (making a total of six times so far!). Waiting for BMW's response on the issue.

Mine is in for drivetrain failure and engine restart warning. Second trip in with overnight stays in the past two months. Don't know how long they will have it this time. When you have a vehicle with the cost approaching 70K, we shouldn't have these type problems that seem repetitious; and one time fixes should be the norm, NOT the exception

When I hear the same HPFP being replaced in 2011 models that were the cause of the problems in prior years, it drives me nuts. Why? If the design is bad, BMW should have changed it long before now. These are not Yugo engineers building new TATA's for God's sake! It's more than ethically wrong to put the same problematic part in cars that you know was a causative factor in earklier model issues.

I know it's not a Ford and that it is so much more technically advanced. Yes, I know it's a luxury car, but neither my 328i nor my work Police Interceptor ever left me sitting wondering if Iit would start again either. No I don't want to go back to either, just want what I paid for to run right and be fixed right the first time. Period!

Having "BMW is working on it" at the bottom of your work order just doesn't cut it with me.

Sorry to hear one of your GT's is giving you issues. How many miles are on the GT with issues? They should know that you had/have enough faith to purchase (2) GT's . How many times have you have to present with the same issue?

Trust me when I tell you I have been there, and I am always reluctant to take the car in for service for fear of some other issue arising as a result of an "all day" reprogram. I am now at 21K, knocking on wood - drivetrrain has been solid - ancilary issues such as amp issues, camera lens fogging, and other "somewhat minor" issues are the only things I have been faced with this time around. I totally understand the frustration with having to make multiple visits to the dealer for the same issues. I make sure to log each an every visit. I learned the value of a paper trail when it comes to "in warranty" vehicles - especially those under 24K miles

I hope they provide you with a timely and permanent resolution to your issues.

I have to say that BMW has always stood behind me with resolving any issues - the GT is no exception.
