Question Thoughts on 550i potential purchase?

looking at 2011 BMW 550i M-Sport Sedan in Jet Black with a Black Dakota Leather interior. Along with a Sport Automatic Transmission, M-Sport Package, M-Sport Aerodynamic Kit, Heated and Ventilated Front Seats, Premium 2 Package, Sunshades, Premium Sound, Navigation, Park Distance Control, Xenon Headlights with Adaptive Light Control, Side and Top View Cameras, and Lumbar Support. M-SPORT PKG / ACTIVE VENTILATED SEAT PKG / PREMIUM 2 PKG / PREMIUM SOUND / NAVIGATION / PARK DISTANCE CONTROL / SIDE AND TOP VIEW CAMERAS /2011 BMW 550i M-Sport Sedan in Jet Black with a Black Dakota Leather interior. As you can see pretty loaded up and priced at $47,990. Mileage 12,500 warranty through 8/2015

now the kicker this BMW 550i was graciously repurchased by BMW of NA to promote customer satisfaction due to California warranty law. Upon inspection before resale, BMW found this vehicle to need an idle speed adjustment, new spark plugs, and fuel injectors. Sounds like drivetrain malfunction problems? Anyhow, I'm thinking about making an offer at $44,630
not too worried it was a repurchase? anyone experience with repurchase and pricing? Would appreciate any input, thank you.

Yes, i seen your car, very nice. Unfortunately vented seats a must and I'll be doing a trade-in. I do like my 535i and it's almost paid off

I would ask your dealer if you could take the car on a extended test drive like for the day or even weekend if possible. Just because sometimes issues doesn't show up on normal 30min test drives and you really want to make sure that this car is mechanically sound before buying it. I would even be as anal as bringing the car to a nearest bmw specialist to do a quick obd2 scan to see if theres any fault codes being logged indicating there is still an issue.

Before i bought my car, i took it to United BMW of Roswell, made an appointment and for $125 they did a complete inspection, and gave me all of the maintenance records, what was done, when and by whom.
I would never buy a car without doing full BMW inspection.

That's a heckuva price, but I passed on a similar deal a few months ago even though the car was offered with CPO warranty (on top of the remainingl factory warranty) and 2-yrs extended maintenance. My former sales consultant, who sold BMWs for 10+ years, and now works for Carfax, said he wouldn't take the bait and advised me not to as well. There's a reason why that car was lemon'ed, and you would be ineligible for lemon law protection since it's now a used car. Normally, I'd take a salesman's suggestion with a grain of salt, but he's a former SCCA competitor, performance driving instructor, and has rebuilt several cars, so I trust what he says.

While you choose to trust the guy that slod cars for 10+ years, i trust myself who owned bmw for 10+ years,
I had 2 salvage titles because headlight and bumper needed replacing, but carfax and whoever assesses damage, hurry to salvage the car.

My friend's car was originally sold in California, where it had 2 repairs of same issue and according to CA laws, owner can file for lemon law. The car is in absolutely perfect condition with very low miles, well optioned. no Accidents, not even fender bender. Same sensor was replaced twice. There is absolutly nothing wrong with a car, but according to CarFax its a junk, walk away!!! Really??
If a car was real junk, BMW would stand behind it and give it full warranty and maintenance program up to 100k.
CarFax's policies are way outdated!!! and irrelavant!

My car had a drivetrain mulfunction, so i brought it in to a dealer, they had a message to replace all 8 fuel injectors , so they did, car had no issues since then.
Do your research, you can go as far as actually seeing what has been done to a car in BMW service record, they have things described in details.

If you do the deal, have in writing that free loaners will be available when/if this car is in for service on warranty. At least it will be their, not your expense if issues arise after your purchase.

Yes, i've reseach this issue and have had it in my 535i, haven't seen it in over a year now. Like I've said been waiting, goign to test drive this weekend. I'm still on the fence M3 or move up to the 550i I know two different cars, that's why i'm going to test drive both. I test drove a M5 2008 but bought the 535i because it was a dealer demo new and had warranty. Have to say deep down M5 was a blast....

Carfax was irrelevant to my point. I only mentioned it to say he is no longer a salesman with a hidden agenda to sell another new car.

You also don't seem to know how Carfax works. They are merely an aggregator of information by scouring insurance, accident, DMV, and salvage records. They have no ability to declare any car/title as salvaged, but can only report whether a state has done so. Carfax's information is far from totally reliable, but it's one of many resources that a potential customer should examine when buying a used vehicle. I also provided my friend BMW's so-called "confidential" service history to review and he determined that the multiple drivetrain malfunctions seemed like too much to overlook even though BMW techs declared the issue finally fixed and added extended warranties/maintenance on top. You lucked out by having no issues buying cars with salvaged titles, but many others are not as fortunate because of serious mechanical or electrical problems.

If your friend's car truly had "absolutly nothing wrong" with it, why did he get rid of it? Just because he could get his money back and get something newer/different? Those kind of customers abuse the system and help pass costs for everyone else. And I bet he still probably trashed BMW and the car to others despite BMW's goodwill gesture for him.

BMW is not in the business to lose money. They would rather resell a lemon'ed car at bargain basement pricing, and take a gamble that the car won't need further repair. That's how warranties/extended warranties work for manufacturers -- it's essentially acceptable risk vs potential reward for them.

If that won,t fly in the deal it might be a way to lower the price, anticipating car rental expenses but the first option of free loaners is much more comforting. Shows just how much faith they place in the repairs done since lemoning.

I'am convinced that the historic record of a car is in NO way determining the future record, maybe in the 70s yes, but now with BMW being lean six sigma assembly compliant... just theoretical and practical impossible! The issue with second hand lemons could be that you buy it with a piggyback of hidden defects never exposed before the sales. So I guess this 550i is as good as any other, flawless 550i you would buy with this milage. So most probably, it's a bargain.
