Garage List
NightMode on Professional Sat Nav

I have now had my BMW for two years and did not realise, until today, that because I had ticked the Traffic Info setting on the Professional SatNav Options; I have been stuck with the dull grayscale map.

Now that I have unticked the Traffic Info display; I have NIGHT MODE in the evenings [colourful route with dusk night sky/stars] and DAY MODE which is more colourful.

DOH!

[Why must I have Traffic Info set off to get this, I have no idea but it is on the latest 640d Convertible as well.]

I think this is because in "traffic info" mode it uses a simplified map display so that it can better highlight traffic problems to the viewer using colour coding.

I like the way the F10 / F11 automatically switches to night mode when daylight fades. Had to do it manually in my 3 coupe.

I know at least on the US version you can still have traffic on the color nav display. But it gives you an option to use the grey scale version to see the arrows better.

Mine is set to color and traffic and it works quite well.

I am about to get delivery of my F11 tomorrow. In the car I test drove, there was the option to have google maps as your navigation map. My car has the internet function. What will I need to get this set up? Does anyone knows? thanks!

in color mode traffic is displayed with small triangles on top of the road, point in the direction of traffic
in gray scale, traffic is displayed with color, no triangles.

Also (and I only rediscovered this by accident after reading this post) if you turn off Traffic Info the 3D Google city map appears. I "lost" this function some weeks into ownership after having ticked the traffic info box and never connected the two events even after an appeal here. 18months on, I have it back...

Thanks for the post!

That is very odd. I have the traffic info box ticked and still get day/night mode automatically. I have not driven the car that long (I only took delivery this afternoon) so I have not seen the 3d city maps from google. But I get google maps in 'perspective 3d' (it looks like it, anyway) when I set my option for 1 mile map scale...

Thanks for that. Is there a particular scale I need to have the maps set to for this?

No it scales from 75 yards up to about 450 yards if I recall correctly. Only major cities centres get the 3 D effect unfortunately. Works in London but only within a surprisingly small area of the centre. Sample photo attached (taken from another post)

Thanks for that. So I guess Lancaster will not be included in this!

I will give it a go though anyway!

Probably not! - I guess the castle, water tower, the Dukes?? might be tall enough to display but unlikely :-). Take a drive through the Trough of Bowland for me in the 5 series. More than compensation for missing 3D sat nav...
