Why no M-Sport brake option? 3 & 4 Series have it.
Getting ready to order a 535xi M-Sport and wonder why BMW has chosen to not offer the M-Sport brakes package as an option? They are available for $650 on the 3 & 4 series but not the 5. I guess my only option is to paint them, which I've done on a number of other cars, but would rather have the factory powder coated finish and ///M labeling.
Anyone have any knowledge of why this is the case? |

I guess the 5 series is meant to be more of a luxury car than the more sporty 3 and 4 series.

I would agree. The sporty options will become fewer as you climb the "food chain" as the buyer demographics are shifting away from pure sport enthusiasts to those who are placing heavier emphasis on luxury. Another case in point, BMW insists it will never offer an M7 since the 7, while sporty and clearly not a Buick, isn't designed for that purpose. Alpina steps in there to fill the void... but let's be honest, it's a very, very small void.

I think the brakes on my 550xi are great (and free to get replaced)... an M-Brake option on this car could only be the base M5 Brembo Brakes, and for a $4500 option (probably an accurate estimate) ... I don't think many would option this, and others have said this is more of a luxury car than a car you're throwing around the track. With that said ... I do put the 550xi M-Sport to the test almost every time I ride it, and let me tell you, it handles it well!

My primary reason for wanting them is looks over improved performance. This car will never get driven hard so the stock brakes are just fine. I'm just a fanatic about how things look and I think the raw cast calipers just end up looking crappy in no time and with the open wheels of the M-Sport, they end up on display.
Will probably just end up painting with G2 epoxy paint like I did on our e46 and e60 a few years back. I've considered caliper covers but most look cheap and bulky. |
