Removing F10 Instrument Cluster For Repair
Does anyone know of a good independent BMW mechanic in the Chicago or NW Indiana area who can remove my 2012 550iX instrument cluster for repair? I have some water stains on the inside of the instrument cluster, I want to open up the instrument cluster and try and remove these stains. However, I don't have the skill/courage to do the job myself. I have no intention of paying the dealer +$2,500 to fit a new instrument cluster when I believe all is required is a simple cleaning of the existing instrument cluster.

Water can damage electronics, so you could file a claim with your insurance. Just keep in mind, if you don't go through insurance and you muck it up, your insurance carrier can deny the claim. |

I am the second owner of the car, I purchased it with this cosmetic damage. I believe it is just condensation staining; not really bad, just annoying. The rest of the car is in excellent condition.

No, the previous response to my post did not tell me exactly how to do the job. Because I do not have the skills/courage to do the job myself, to say nothing of not being able to find clear instructions on how to do it, this is why I am trying to find an independent BMW mechanic, or knowledgable enthusiast, in the NW Indiana region to do the job for me.

Got it...please give this a try:
Check out this youtube video: Then, once you've seen this, you will see how little skill one needs to remove the cluster from the car. Once it is removed, lay it face-down on a soft cloth and remove the few silver-colored screws around the perimeter of the back of the cluster that hold the face plate in place (they are obvious), pull the face plate off, clean it, replace it, and reverse the process. The tool that you'll need to remove the screws is a small TORX tool...you can buy a pack of all the smallest sizes from any auto parts store for less than $10.
