Racing with RWD 550i
What's the best tips to race from a dig with a 550i RWD?
Stability control on ? Or traction control completely off ? What rpms to launch? Optimum RPM to shift? From a roll, say 20mph.. 2nd gear? What RPM to floor it in 2nd? |

I usually keep it in "Sport" setting, keep the transmission in "DS" and just gun it. Try braking and launching at different RPMS, but Badblack on the forums would be the best person to speak too as he does the 1/4 mile the most on here.

Somewhat generically and universally, it's a weight-transfer game with a rwd car.
My F10 isn't a 550, but my 450hp 4-door Mercury has similar physics. First, push all of the buttons the right way. Aside from cars with serious Launch Control, most traction controls are designed for additional safety and stability, not acceleration. They cut throttle and/or apply brakes... so its best to defeat them as much as possible. Second, hold a foot on the brake and build rpm's and boost modestly... with practice you'll learn how much you can get away with before you just lose everything to tire smoke. When the light turns green... wait, you must be at a drag strip, so when the last lights on Christmas Tree turn yellow... never wait for the green... release the brake and smoothly apply full throttle. Don't smack the pedal to the floor. Try to immediately, like instantly, get 1/2 throttle and then spend about a second getting the pedal to the metal. 1/2 throttle shouldn't spin the tires, it should move the car pretty hard though. This will allow the weight to transfer onto the back wheels and really plant them... giving you maximum grip to harness all that horsepower that you gradually pour on. This takes way more concentration than you'd think is necessary but the physics involved in hooking up 400+ hp in under 2-seconds takes a little finess. |

For me it seems to be in Sport, hold down the TC button to turn if "off", Sport transmission mode.
However as Gpfarrell said, with the RWD 550s getting all that HP to stick off the line (especially on RFTs...) is pretty touch. The xi's do better with it. I've learned to not mash off the line because if you go over little bumps I can feel it break traction and cost a little time. I also shift at 5k RPM as I've seen on most dynos after that you start down on the power band. Somewhere around there, anyway, so shift at about 4.5k to hit 5k. The best thing about the F10 is the look on people's faces when your 10,000lb saloon leaves them in the dust. Total sleepers. I love racing off the line with my massager and cooled seats on.

There's no point in manually shifting the auto. The gear ratios of the ZF 8speed are spread pretty close to each other. I doubt you can manually shift faster than letting the autobox do its thing. |

What I've been told to do is roll the car in reverse and then put the drive selector into D as fast as you can. The rolling back motion ensures that you get a nice holeshot. I've been able to beat a lot of cars with that technique.
