2011 535i HPFP issues (resolved nicely)
I have a 2011 535i (bought in Aug 2010, N55 engine, no mods etc) with barely 42k miles of which maybe 100 miles were driven "hard". It came off warranty in Aug 2014.
Around February of this year (2015) I starting having the violent shakes soon after starting and the turbos wouldn't kick in. 90% of the time, a simple restart would set things back to normal. Then in May the car overheated (drivetrain malfunction) and turns out the coolant pump and thermostat needed to be replaced for*$1,573. Not too shabby for a car that I've paid $0 to maintain in the 5-ish years. Done! Then, earlier this month (Dec) the shakes started again more frequently and the car felt like it was on a 900cc engine. It just had no oomph. Called BMW NA who told me to take it in to the dealer and they'd "take care of it". Dealer diagnoses it and says the HPFP has taken a dive and it'll be $1,800-ish for that + a new fuel rail. Of course, BMW NA reneges and says "sorry, we can't cover anything". Dealer offers 15% off and I took it. An hour before I'm scheduled to pick up the car, the dealer calls saying he's got good news. Turns out there's a CA-specific recall/warranty on the HPFP for 7 years/70k miles and my new bill will be some $250 for a new low pressure sensor. Not too shabby. Anyway... posting this here in case anyone else has such issues. If you're in CA and you've paid to have your car's HPFP replaced, you should probe around and you might be able to get your $$ back.

Caught mine before it totally failed and BMW replaced it under my CPO warranty. I wasn't having any driving issues, but was getting longer than usual crank times on first start up of the day, and it was diagnosed as the HPFP. Thanks for sharing though, this WILL help someone.

What are the usual symptoms aside from a check engine light and a drivetrain malfunction. The car idles a bit rough lately. Im not sure if its related to the change of weather here in NY, its been raining pretty much in the last 48 hours and its been warm and humid.

Pramit, PM sent! My car is currently at the dealership for a HPFP failure and they're trying to charge me for the replacement. Do you have documentation on the specific CA specific recall? Thanks!

On a side note, the SA said the new pump (part number 13517616170) is the most up-to-date version and much more reliable. We shall see...
