Shifter returns automatically

Next time you're driving in Sport, just shut off the motor after you bring your car to a stop. After a second, a little motor will move the shift lever back to the right!

Same if you hit P. As someone who always had MT, it made me say "Seriously?" not "cool!"

Yeah...I noticed that when I first got the car. I accidentally turned the car off in sport mode and it shifted over to park automatically... pretty cool and dummy proof!

Yes. This action preserves the stateless environment of the shifter.

This is why you can put it in sport mode by shifting the sport gate, hit stop, and the car will politely shift into park.

Without the kinetic movement, the car would not be able to shift into park upon powering off the car. Well, at least the shifter would not be in sync with the state of the car.

This is also why the shifter pops back into the neutral position after shifting into "D".

The concept is called stateless.

BMW got it right. But, many American cars goof it up.

Your knob for the main volume control is stateless. You cannot tell what the volume level is by looking at the knob---for the same reasons.

This way, the volume can be controlled by more than one source. Or, upon entering the vehicle, the volume can be lowered based on a profile preset.

Ever notice when you come home in your bimmer with the speakers throbbing that on the next morning the levels are reduced?

By keeping the shifter stateless, BMW can control the shifter by more than one source. If you open your door, with the car in drive, and your foot on the brake without your seatbelt (in some cars), taking your foot off the brake immediately shifts the car into park.

Stateless baby.

Professional audio mixing consoles take the stateless to a new level. The faders will kinetically move into position based on saved settings, most other knobs are stateless. This way, you can control the mix from your computer or the mixing console.

In short, stateless allows control to be handed to more than one source.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

"Stateless." That makes a lot of sense. I have wondered about this when I switch on reading lamps in a jet; can the pilot turn all lights off from the cockpit without the crew having to go row-by-row and return settings to "off" after parking the plane?

Interesting. I also noticed that it pops back into park when you try to drive off with the door open. I was trying to pull into my garage with the drivers side door slightly open and it just wouldn't let me, kept on switching back to park.

Well, only recently (since 1985) has the aviation industry grabbed on to the stateless concept.

You see, air crash investigators typically rely on the position of switches and gauges.

For example, there is even a term for this called "witness marks."

Witness marks are caused by the paint on an analog gauge's needle striking its clear protective surface after an impact. The witness marks can aid the investigator by conveying where the needle was at the time of impact.

Of course this doesn't always work in modern glass cockpits. But, even modern cockpits have basic gauges in case the glass (display monitors) fails.

Finally, even older aircraft have updated passenger compartments. So, you provide a fine example on how stateless buttons may work on some aircraft.

I find this feature very annoying. I remember the first time I tried to pull the car up on ramps to change the oil I had the door open and it kept going in park. I must have tried like 10 times thinking wtf is wrong with this car before I realized it was a "feature".

On some software versions, you can open the door and move the car in reverse so long as your seatbelt is locked.

The second you take off your seatbelt, the car will pop into park.

Same here! I don't have back up cameras so every now and than I'll pop my door open to look out to see how much more room I got and the car will just automatically go in park. Annoying!

No you're not screwing anything up, switching the car off automatically puts it into park and applies the handbrake

Do you have Auto H on?
If I don't have Auto H on, I have to pull up the handbrake button to engage the handbrake.

If you are using the auto-hold function it reverts to applying the e-brake on switch off.
