Broken Springs

So my car is in for some recall work and the dealer has called me and advised that both rear springs are broken!

BMW want £530 to replace them both, rang a local BMW specialist who have quoted £350 using Sachs OE springs.

I've never come across this brand before, but the Indy is saying it's a good quality part... Anyone have any knowledge of this brand?

I'm a bit annoyed as I just had the alignment done a week ago! I guess I'm going to have it redone once the springs are changed?

I had a Sachs oil cooler about 45 years ago it's a good quality German manufacturer, I wouldn't have any qualms about using Sachs springs.

Thanks, I normally get all maintenance done at the dealership. My car is also due a service and brake fluid change in addition to the springs, so this was going to cost around £1.1k from BMW...

This lead me to look into a BMW specialist that has just relocated to a new workshop near me. They are quoting around £750 for the same work, it's quite a saving. I'm torn as I like to use BMW, but my head is telling me it's just not worth paying the extra on a six year old car!

Totally agree, BMW really do take the P when it comes per hour charges and parts costs.

Is that on the 'value' servicing prices, off the BMW website ?

You tend to find that dealers will only quote the discounted prices if you specifically ask for them.

https://www.bmw-service.co.uk/ should give you the cheaper servicing prices. Then you call the dealer, and book in on that basis (assuming the prices are improved, of course).

I had this with my last service on the 325d. Dealer quoted £190 for oil/filter change. Website came up with £140. Phone dealer : "Oh, yes sir, we'll price match".

So when I took the car in, got the service manager over. Explained very clearly that we've had 8 cars off them over the years, and next time they try shafting me, I'll treat it as I can't trust them any more, and that the Audi dealership is half a mile away. Sales bloke I've dealt with over the years was within earshot too.

When I picked the car up a few hours later, "No charge sir, it's complimentary".

If you have full history it might be worth asking for BMW to make a goodwill contribution as it is occuring more now, although at 6 years old I'd guess you'll struggle.

Have a look at this thread

http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1361686

where both TDawg1 and myself reported broken springs.
All the parts are listed included part numbers for a F10 530d Msport.

I'm now at the stage where I will not entertain a BMW dealer for work due the age of my car (nearly 7 years old now) coupled with having a very good independent garage.

If I suffer another failure I would look at a full ACS spring set up or even purchasing a single spring from Germany/UK BMW dealer and having it fitted by an independent.

Thanks, yes I was aware of value servicing and tbh the dealer didn't try and pull the wool over my eyes. They were clear and honest showing me the value servicing price list for all the items that I required

Somehow I really doubt that they will cover this as the car is well out of warranty and had no extended warranty...
