is this normal?

So i drove around 40kms (24 miles) and my temperature gauge was still not in the middle…roughly how long does it take for it to reach the mid point for you guys?? The pic shows where the needle was at the end of the journey...

Mine reaches just under 100oC after 2-3 miles of non-heavy driving in around 12-15oC temp and then sits at 100oC for rest of journey. I'd go to Service Centre as could be temp sensor or fan. Mind you, diagnostic would have pinged up if either of those, I would have thought. Doesn't look massively under 100oC though - about 90?

Nothing out of the ordinary. Many car mfrs fake it by putting the needle of the temp gauge in the middle for a wide range of normal temps. That way they don't have to deal with your kind. But for some reason BMW uses actual oil temp readout. In your case, the needle is more than half-way from 70 to 120, so roughly 95-100ºC. There's a lot of oil in there, so it mightn't ever get to the 120º mark, even in steamy Singapore.

It's very normal, my three BMWs never went to 120.
Even on the hottest day in Toronto mine also just stays at 110.

Interesting to see the difference between a gas and diesel f10.
On my diesel f10 the temp scale shows 50°C - 100°C - 150°C in stead of 70 - 120 - 170, and the needle stands right in the middle at 100°C when the engine is warm.

Mine too (diesel F11 though). 50-100-150. Sits at 100oC once warm.

I was thinking about this thread today as I set off for a longish journey. Took 3 miles to get just under 100oC and a total of 5 miles of driving (not exceeding 3000rpm) to reach 100oC and it sat there for rest of journey.

Looks to be where my car's temp sits. Remember, BMW wants the engine temp in a normal range for most operating conditions, so unless you are stuck in traffic with the outside temp at 30C, I doubt you'll see it move much over 100C.
