Worth changing engine oil between intervals car says it needs????
In the good old days of DIY car servicing almost every Haynes manual used to say that regular oil and filter changes are the most import preventative measures you can take to look after your car.
My car has 15000 on the clock. I can't help but think that the oil changes requested by the car are very far apart and that it does no harm to change the oil irrespective in between the dates demanded by the car. Does not need to go in service book, just get the job done. Local Independent can do the oil and filter change for about £100 with proper BMW synthetic oil and filter. Is it worth it do you think? Car has a service pack on it and has 18 months warranty left on it. Would BMW take issue with me doing this?

I don't think it's worth it, back in the days the oil quality used on most cars was pretty poor. I used to change the oil on my Golf GTI's every 4-6k.
Followed the service schedule on my previous 6 BMW's and had no issues at all... |

Yes, it went against the grain to see my new F11 530d back in Aug 2013 proudly displaying that 1st Service would be in some 18K miles time - or June 2015, whichever came first ...
I guess you might consider more frequent changes if you do a lot of short journeys ... but otherwise, todays oils, engine materials & build-tolerances etc seem to cope well ... Couple it with the Service Package (5 years in my case) and one wonders how BMW Service Depts make money !

Another bit of information, I gathered from an ex-BMW testing guy...
The engine oil used by BMW in new cars (since the advent of dynamic service intervals) is mixed with BMW patented special additives - so doing your first Oil change early is actually detrimental. You may choose to do early services from 2nd time onwards - but not the first. Again, as previous posts; rely on the BMW engineers - I have had no issues with my 5 cars and just followed the car's guide.

This what he said. Short journey end up giving you more condensation in the oil and getting PCV blocked and having issues in the later life of the car. but by then your would have sold the car. Other exception is when your car is 80K plus. Then its beneficial that you change your engine oil in b/w services. On my previous E90 and E91, I always changes it every 7-8K irrespective of what CBS was telling me. I have some issues on E90 because engine was one of the unreliable engine. On 330d, never had issues.

Thanks for the input guys.
Amazing how they make the cars so well nowadays. The metal machining of the engine must be absolutely spot on to minimise metal particulates circulating and causing abrasion inside the engine. I will leave it alone then. I envisage selling the car at the end of the warranty anyway in 18 months or so.

Short journey are more detrimental to the engine but this is compensated for by the algorithm calculating a reduced interval oil change. I believe the oil change interval is based on the amount of fuel consumed.

I am planning to keep my car for a while hence performing an oil change in between services, to avoid any issues hopefully related to the quality of the Diesel we get!
I got this advice from an independent mechanics a well-established one here in the West of Ireland he tend to service a lot top performance cars! |
