MattPro's 550iX Build Thread

Used to be around the forums quite a bit a couple years back, took a break for a while and figured it was time to finally document some of my build in case it may benefit others in the future.

The car is a Carbon black 2013 550 xDrive.

Current list of modifications.

Visual:
- RW Carbon rear diffuser
- M5 instrument cluster
- PerfectTuning universal gauge (monitoring bank 1/2 boost and meth injection pressure)

Suspension:
- H&R sport springs
- M5 sway bars

Wheels:
- Avant Garde M590 (Custom brushed polished finish)

Drivetrain:
- Ported heads
- Thickest OEM HGs
- Custom piston ring gap
- Ceramic coated piston skirts
- N63Intake Hybrid Turbos
- Custom quad injection meth setup (using prometh nozzles and other hardware)
- TorqByte methanol controller
- JB4 w/ BCM
- Custom intake setup (basically N63Intake)
- Ceramic coated exhaust manifolds
- ARM catless downpipes
- Muffler delete

Here's some pictures as the car starts now, then I'll give a bit of history of it.

Purchased the car one week short of 4 years ago. It had ~30k miles on it, completely stock, CPO.
Couldn't make it a month without tossing the JB4 S2 on it.
Didn't take long for the muffler delete and H&R springs to come either. Next were the Alpina turbos, and then methanol.

Sadly, last July, was taking the car on a road trip to the Tail of the Dragon when the car shut off on my on the highway. Turns out I spun a rod bearing.

There were many pictures of the progress up until this point, but I'll skip to the exciting stuff.
As many of you know N63s are on backorder, so I waited for a few months for an engine (purchasing myself), and then due to some complications in my life I just decided to rebuild the engine myself and not wait any longer.

I kept track of all of my expenses from the rebuild here (I was very diligent until a couple parts at the end it is missing):

If anyone has any questions about my experiences or the process feel free to let me know!

There's so much I've been through and replaced on this car...

As time goes on I'll go back through my pictures and post both old and new updates and changes!

Incredible job Matt, very impressive, clearly a labor of love. All the same, I am glad I got rid of my 2012 550iX. Loved the car, perfect to drive. But, maintenance cost and reliability were just too much for me. Sure miss that car!

Great job. I can't help wonder what BMW would have done for you if you towed it to them. I understand you have a lot of aftermarket parts. BMW also understands the issues related to this motor. Read stories about people getting new motors even after 100k.

Rebuilt mine. I actually ended up buying a spare engine off of Craigslist which ended up having a spun bearing as well. So I had the crankshaft repaired and then rebuilt an engine using the best base parts from both engines (minus everything new that was replaced obviously).

(also might want to edit out the my quoted post from your response, it doubles all of the images on the page and makes it huge haha)

I definitely understand that. I know I am crazy, so I don't know how other people can put up with these cars haha. They drive amazingly when they run well but that isn't very often for the unlucky ones haha.

I considered that, but sadly I haven't heard of anyone getting any help with a non-running engine. If it runs well enough to get any kind of oil consumption test for the class action I've heard of people getting help (or past documented oil consumption issues and a failed engine). Sadly, I have neither, and since I was 4k miles over my CPO (104k) with many aftermarket parts I decided to just eat the cost and do the work myself. At least now I know there's nothing left on this car to fail that I can't handle myself!

I've upgraded to the N63Intakes hybrid turbos. There's a comparison pic with 3 turbos - stock vs Alpina vs N63I hybrids in the top post.

No dynos yet, still working on dialing in the new setup!

OMG that's impressive. I've got 14 months to go until the warranty expires, then looking to start doing some mods (start with replacing the turbos).

QQ. You're the first person that actually posted a pic of the RW Carbon rear diffuser. How's the overall finish and fit?

So I ordered this one over 3 years ago, last time I checked I didn't see one listed with the exact same name. But the finish is very good, fit is okay. I didn't have it installed by a body shop or anything so it doesn't line up perfectly. But it looks great and has held up these past 3 years. I'll see if I can grab a close up picture later today.
